Happy Architectural Sunday. I am exploring popular Architectural home styles on Sundays. Today is Mediterranean. Here is a brief description of characteristics, and images, of Mediterranean, which is pretty popular in California. Mediterranean Influenced by the area from which it's named, regions in Spain, France and Italy, this style became extremely popular in the U.S. from 1918 to 1940. The homes were modeled after the hacienda style, with low-pitched tile roofs, often red..., being the most distinctive characteristic. Usually finished in stucco, they often include extensive outdoor living areas, columns, and arched windows and openings. Wrought-iron balconies and details are also common characteristic. This style is very popular again and feature a lot of the original design elements, including porticos, balconies and ornamental details such as heavy wooden doors and multicolored tiles. See more
