Next week join us for an artist lecture by Raoul De la Sota! Tuesday 2/26 at 6pm in Chem 3, free & open to the public. Raoul De la Sota was born of Mexican-Irish-Basque-Tarahumara parentage in Los Angeles. As a child he was very ill with asthma and couldn't go out to play with his neighborhood friends, so he spent most of his time alone, but with his notepad and pencils drawing fanciful worlds. Raoul could not attend school until the 6th grade because of that asthma. He final...ly got better, attended Marshall High School and then LACC. After graduation he attended UCLA where he received his Masters in Pictorial Art . Almost immediately Raoul began teaching at Los Angeles City College and stayed on until 4 years ago. During his teaching career Raoul received two Teacher of the Year Awards and 1 Learning Achievement Award. He was the first Chicano artist to receive a Fulbright Fellowship to study in Peru. He gave a 4-University Lecture tour on Chicano Art in Colombia on behalf of the US State Department. His work was on an 11-country exhibit tour through Africa also on behalf of the US State Department. Raoul has been a judge for the Baja California Art Biennale. He has conducted classes on Latin American Art for the Docents of the Los Angeles County Art Museum as well as leading art tours to Spanish-speaking countries. He has also shown my work in Mexico, Peru, Spain and countless galleries and Museums in the United States. Raoul is happily married to Leticia Garcia for 33 years now. He met her at LACC where she was working as an Administrative Assistant in the Disabled Students Office. See more
