La Bruja: Tango at the Berkeley City Club

The Embassy of Argentina in Washington and the Pan American Symphony Orchestra are hosting a free online screening of I Tita, A Life of Tango (Yo Soy Asi, Ti...ta de Buenos Aires) on PASO's YouTube channel this Friday, May 22 at 8:00pm. Written and directed by María Teresa Costantini and starring Mercedes Funes in the title role, the 2017 Argentine film tells the story of actress, singer, and dancer Tita Merello, from a poverty-stricken childhood to her first gigs in the cabarets of Buenos Aires and meteoric rise in theater and film. Society and Culture in the Buenos Aires of Tango (1920s-1940s) This lecture will explore key changes in the history of Buenos Aires society and culture in central decades of the modernization of Argentine Society: we will explore the changes in sociability, gender relations, fashion, and the cultural industry. The lecture will focus on local changes informed by transnational processes, connecting Buenos Aires with the rest of the world.
