Councilmember Huizar Announces 100 Bus Bench Art Installation Los Angeles City Councilmember José Huizar invites Angelenos to keep an eye out for new public art on the streets debuting this week in Council District 14. Twenty artistic installations will be placed on bus benches throughout Downtown Los Angeles and Boyle Heights on Friday, July 5, 2013. The City of Los Angeles’ DoArt Foundation (DoArt) and Make Art Public (MAP) curated the installations in coordination with M...artin Outdoor Media after Councilmember Huizar’s office reached out to the company with the idea of filling available spaces on the benches with art until they are leased out for advertisement. This project gives us the opportunity to bring art to the public right-of-way, said Councilmember Huizar, describing how the project got started. I want to thank all our partners, especially the artists, for lending their talents to the City. DoArt, a local arts organization focused on public art and education, and MAP, a Montreal-based collective dedicated to creating public art on unsold advertising space, funded and curated the project, selecting artists Dulce Pinzón and Jon Rafman for the installations. Councilmember Huizar has long pushed for more art in public places through his initiation of a 1st Street Arts Corridor in Boyle Heights and leading the effort to adopt a new Mural Ordinance for the City of Los Angeles.

Bike Nation Coming Soon Bike Nation, a private company, will be installing Los Angeles' first bike share network here in Downtown. They are scheduled to begin a beta test of their system this month and eventually grow the service into a 4,000 bicycle pilot program with 400 kiosks to be expanded to Venice, Westwood and Hollywood. Last year Bike Nation approached Councilmember Huizar and the Mayor's office to work with the City to provide a pilot bike share program at no cost... to the City. This public mobility service will be available for short trips within the City and serve as an alternative to motorized public transportation and reduce the amount of carbon dioxide that is regularly generated from automobiles and buses. Bike Nation will be installing up to 15 bicycle docks, with a solar-powered kiosk and map panel located on Alameda Street, just north of Los Angeles Street. Once installed these bicycles located conveniently close to Union Station and other Downtown locations will allow tourists, families, commuters and students to travel at their own pace in bicycle lanes recently installed as part of the City's Bicycle Master Plan. To learn more about Bike Nation visit their website.
