KYOTO GIFT & FOOD 08.05.2021

Happy 90th Birthday to Kimi Rose! She’s been shopping at Kyoto for 30+ years. Since she can’t drive we bring her favorite items from the store and sit and visit to alleviate her loneliness for a brief time. She never had kids and all her family is in Japan. She came from a large family 6 siblings and said my parents make love no TV. She married a sailor her junior and came to the USA in her 40s and never returned to her homeland. Her husband passed away 4 years ago but her mother in law (who’s nearly 100) and brother in law still comes to visit from Vegas/Michigan 3/4 times a year. Other than her in-laws and her friendly neighbors she doesn’t get a lot of social interaction. She loves going to a casino when able to and yearns to play slots after covid. We would love to share any birthday wishes with her!

A photo essay of the traditional making of mochi with a little aid of modern tech. Traditionally, mochi was made from whole rice, in a labor-intensive process. The traditional mochi-pounding ceremony in Japan is mochitsuki: 1000lbs of Polished glutinous rice was washed on Friday, soaked over 2 nights and then steamed, pounded and packaged on a Sunday morning. All done in one weekend. ... The steamed rice is mashed in an electric grinder and then pounded with wooden mallets (kine) in a traditional mortar (usu). - The work involves two people, one pounding and the other turning and wetting the substance, the mochi. - They must keep a steady rhythm or they may accidentally injure each other with the heavy kine. The sticky mass can be eaten immediately or formed into various shapes (usually a sphere or cube).
