Cabrillo National Monument is one of the lesser known attractions here in San Diego. Located in Point Loma, the monument commemorates Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo who has been recognized as the first European to set foot on the West Coast as he landed in San Diego bay on September 28, 1542. . . . The statue looks out into the Pacific and is a great place to see grey whales migrate down to Mexico There is also a 2.5 mile round trip trail that winds through the beautiful scenery and descends down 300 feet to the coast.
