We are excited to announce our collaboration with Landworks Studio, Inc. Earlier this year we received a commission from the Town of Eastham, MA for the Rock Harbormaster Building and Revitalization Project. The project will respond to the fragile ecology and the potential for sea level rise while reflecting the vernacular architecture of Cape Cod. What if you took two blocks of office towers in the Financial District, closed off traffic between them and turned the street into a park? What if you converted one block to apartment housing and the other to green energy infrastructure, wastewater treatment and vertical agriculture? You’d have a self-contained, energy-independent community of the future. We call it the microhood. July is Disability Pride Month! ADA Legislation would not be around today if it weren't for the 504 Sit-in, a protest which lasted 26 days. Check out our interview with Natalie Fung, in which we discuss the importance of social activism and diversity in the design process. https://kuthranieri.com//learning-from-history-to-design-/

We would like to celebrate Juneteenth by sharing lecture by architect, designer and professor, Mabel O. Wilson. Her lecture discusses the history of Black oppression and the significance of erecting memorials acknowledging it: ‘To raise the historical consciousness of Black Americans was a project that the labor civil rights and Black nationalist movements of all stripes saw as integral to the fight against structural economic and political racism’s devastating impact on Black life’ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5f7Z6gn448c&t=670s

Celebrating the legacy of Harvey Milk on his 90th Birthday. Milk was the first openly gay elected official, elected to the SF Board of Supervisors in the late 1970s. He was sadly slain eleven months later. We’ve been involved in the design of three memorials to Harvey Milk: The Harvey Milk Memorial Transit Car, The Harvey Milk Memorial Plaza (in collaboration with RHAA Landscape Architects and Catherine Wagner (artist)), and SFO Harvey Milk Terminal (in collaboration with HEN...SEL PHELPS, and Gensler San Francisco ). To read more about the life of Harvey Milk & our projects dedicated to him, you can read our latest blog. #harveymilk #socialjustice #activism #glbtq #sanfrancisco #harveymilkday #queerhistory #sf #humanrights #loveislove #architecture #castrodistrict #architecturelovers https://kuthranieri.com//only-connect-memorializing-harve/

Home sweet home. We hope that during this shelter-in-place, you are all enjoying the opportunity to stay home and recuperate during these uncertain times. When we think of home, we think of a sanctuary, a place for family & relaxation. We tackle each of our residential designs with sensitivity and care, working hand in hand with the client and general contractor to create the perfect home. For this week’s #throwbackthursday, we would like to share the Claremont Canyon Resi...dence. The original 2-story home was built in 1937 by John Ekin Dinwiddie of Dinwiddie and Hill Architects. Our remodel carefully considered connecting each space to the landscape beyond while maintaining privacy from the street. We optimized the circulation to allow for a more open feeling within each room and to accommodate large family gatherings. By doing so, the new stairs became a central feature of the space. The custom handrail detail balances contemporary with traditional. The updated façade incorporates new lift & slide windows which open up to a beautiful view of the San Francisco Bay. In a time when social distancing is crucial, how have you redefined connection? Is it through phone calls? Zoom meetings? Maybe even handwritten letters? One of our main goals when designing public spaces is to connect people. This week’s throwback is our Linking Shade project proposal in Phoenix, AZ. Phoenix is a city heavily reliant on cars, making connections between urban hotspots challenging. We proposed an outdoor canopy which would create pedestrian connections between... these hotspots. A cable strung with ceramic ovoid-shaped tiles embedded with photovoltaic cells, motion sensors, and LEDs, would serve as shade during the day and illumination at night. This project was a collaboration with Rodolphe el-Khoury, Dean of The School of Architecture at University of Miami. https://www.instagram.com/p/B_5TCSrJZ_D/?igshid=ln0dhbrj6n3b

This is NOT a filter! This is an original video of our installation, The Body in Repose, which was on display at @sfmoma as part of the Fabrications: Bodybuildings exhibition back in 1998. Talk about #throwbackthursday! 800 lbs. of half inch synthetic felt, held together by one thousand C-clamps, was fashioned to shape a series of benches and intimate enclosures. The felt surface created a physical condition of intimacy and privacy in an otherwise public realm. This project won an award for Best of Category for Environments by I.D. Magazine. https://www.instagram.com/p/B_VYZfHpfMI/
