CALL TO ACTION to defend sacred land in California! Contact the Bureau of Land Management and demand to know why they arrested Indigenous land protectors in the interest of border wall construction. The Kanap Kuahan (Tell the Truth) Coalition is moving forward with its Remove the Columbus Statue in Chula Vista campaign and your help is urgently needed. Especially if you are a resident of Chula Vista. At its January public meeting, the 11-member Human Relations Commission, in a unanimous vote, approved a Resolution recommending that the Chula Vista City Council remove the statue of Christopher Columbus from Discovery Park in Chula Vista; that Discovery Park be re-named by... a Community Task Force comprised of Kumeyaay tribal members and general community, and that Columbus Day, October 12, be re-named and recognized as Indigenous Peoples Day. The Resolution must be voted on and adopted by the Chula Vista City Council. The Resolution may be placed on the Chula Vista City Council's agenda for discussion and vote in September. WHAT YOU CAN DO: Send an email to the Chula Vista City Council right away. Ask your friends to send an email too. HOW: It is important that you use your own words while conveying a unified message. cc: [email protected] so they have a record of all emails sent to CVCC Letters must be no more than 200 words. Please provide your name, city, and telephone number (phone numbers will not be published). SEND YOUR EMAIL TO : Mayor Mary Salas, [email protected] John McCann, District 1, [email protected] Jill Galvez, District 2, [email protected] Stephen C. Padilla, District 3, [email protected] Mike Diaz, District 4, [email protected] Send a copy of your email as cc to: [email protected] so KKC can keep a copy for our records. SAMPLE WORDING (but please use your own words; see photos of other letters, below) Dear Members of the Chula Vista City Council: I thank and applaud you for removing and placing into storage the statue of Christopher Columbus from Discovery Park, and ask that the city council ratify the resolution that was sent before you by the Chula Vista Human Relations Commission about this issue in February. The time is past due for Chula Vista to truly live up to its name as a Welcoming City. We now know the truth about Columbus. It is known that statues and symbols of racism cause great emotional and physical harm to Native Peoples as well as to African-American, Mexican and Chicano, and other Persons of Color. When we know better, we do better. Removing the statue of Christopher Columbus is not erasing history; it is correcting it. I urge you to permanently remove the statue of Columbus, re-name Discovery Park, and recognize Indigenous Peoples Day instead of Columbus Day. Sincerely, [YOUR NAME] [YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS] [YOUR TELEPHONE NUMBER] [ADDRESS] ----------------------------- Eyaay ahun, Kanap Kuahun Coalition Steering Committee Kanap Kuahan Coalition // Tell The Truth See more

The members of the Kanap Kuahan Coalition acknowledge that we stand upon a land that carries the footsteps of millennia of Kumeyaay people. They are a people whose traditional lifeways intertwine with a worldview of earth and sky in a community of living beings. This land is part of a relationship that has nourished, healed, protected and embraced Kumeyaay people to the present day. As individuals and members of both the Kanap Kuahan Coalition and the San Diego community we a...cknowledge this legacy and find inspiration from this land; the land of Kumeyaay people. We center Kumeyaay Peoples in our actions and collaborate with Kumeyaay tribal leaders/citizens in decision-making. We thank Kumeyaay tribal member, Michael Connolly, who wrote the land acknowledgement for SDSU from which this is excerpted and adapted. https://youtu.be/Q3w3MQkT9B0

A List of Suggestions When Teaching about the Kumeyaay and Other Native American Groups: Do not dress children up as Indians. This is seen as offensive and mocking to Native Americans. It is equivalent to having students pretend to be Catholic, Jewish, Hispanic, or African American. Being Native American is not a role like being a cowboy or fireman. It is who you are. Do not make masks. Masking is a feature of many religious traditions. (The Kumeyaay did not use masks...Continue reading
