Guard your health with your lifestyle -mwezo- Just keep fighting for your health No one said living this life was going to be easy. As one of our country artist puts it: getting old ain’t for sissies, I strongly agree. So if you want to thrive, you must strive. Back in the day, our ancestors were forced to strive to survive as they had to go out and hunt and gather food. While at the same time, they had to avoid being eaten by other life forms. They had to move their bodi...es because their survival depended upon how healthy and strong they were. This comfort-seeking lifestyle that we have created in America is making us weak and sickly. 40% of Americans 75 years and older are obese and live a sedentary lifestyle that is destroying their health. 80% of this same older adult population is stressed out and has at least one chronic disease. To add insult to injury, 80% of people over 75 are on prescription medications. 45% of our older populations drink alcohol regularly and many have alcohol related health problems. Adding to our health challenge is the lack of motivation to change. Many of us with health challenges have given up and accepted our condition. This is where Kujiweza Healing Arts steps in. Our students know that their body and mind is always striving to keep them well and if they just do their part, they are going to be alright. One who loves his or her life does not give up because of down turns, but stands up and fights for every moment knowing that there is new life and renewal in every new breath he or she takes. (e.g. As long as you are breathing, there is still a chance.) They know that any moment their diligent right efforts could turn things around. No matter how slow things go, how tough they get or how long it takes, they never quit believing that they can make their life better. Healing comes because one simply refuses to settle for things as they are. They have visions of being healthy and happy and they stay strong to meet every obstacle with confidence and enthusiasm, until their wellness comes. They do not give up because of something someone said because their desire to be healthy and happy is so much stronger. Nature put us through these challenges, not to weaken us or break us, but to build us up and toughen us up in order to bring out our best character. Winning is simple, but not easy; as all we have to do to win is to get up one more time than we were knocked down. I was listening to the words of a country song the other day that is really applicable here.
