Happy Fall! One of KP Santa Rosa’s PGY-3 chief residents Dr. Lauren Glaser, MD showing her fall colors and matching our very own, unique one of two, Moss walls! These little buddies have been quietly watching over our residents on the hospital rotations while keeping the air fresh when we needed most! Not to mention looking stinking cool at the same time. Thinking green has never looked so cool

It’s not too late to register to vote! We multitasked in continuity clinic today putting together enough laminated @vot_er_org badges for all of our faculty and residents, so that we can support our community in exercising their civic right. We’re proud to work for an organization that supported National Voter Registration Day. #vote #healthisprimary From the website: Kaiser Permanente is partnering with National Voter Registration Day to promote voting and civic engageme...nt among our more than 12.4 million members and more than 217,000 employees and physicians. Elections are the cornerstone of our democracy. If you live on the west coast, chances are the air quality in your area is currently very poor. This is a map of the current Air Quality Index of the western United States. Here are some friendly reminders to help keep you and your loved ones safe during this wildfire season. Wildfire smoke exposure can cause adverse respiratory and cardiovascular effects. Certain groups that are more sensitive to the effects of smoke include people with heart or lung disease (such as asthma... or COPD), those who are pregnant, as well the very young and elderly. More common symptoms of smoke exposure include a cough, scratchy throat, irritated sinuses, chest pain, headaches, itchy/stinging in eyes, and a runny nose. During wildfire season, pay attention to local air quality reports. (See photo 2, swipe ) Check your weather app, or visit sites such as AirNow.gov or Purpleair.com. Limit your time outdoors, even if you are healthy. Stay indoors, keep your windows closed and use an air conditioner in your home and car. Use A/C on recirculation mode when in your automobile. Adults may benefit from using an N95 mask or P-100 respirator if they have one and must be outdoors. Adequate respirator mask fit may not be possible for people with certain face shape and size or facial hair. Masks often do not come in sizes that fit young children. Cloth masks and other face coverings that help slow the spread of COVID-19 aren’t effective for smoke. Consider purchasing one or more room HEPA filter air purifiers. Keep them in the room(s) where you spend most of your time. MERV 5 to 8 filter ratings (or higher) in home HVAC systems can also significantly improve air quality in your home. Stay safe everyone! Meet Dr. Robert Martinez, one of our star core faculty who works with residents on both inpatient and outpatient medicine as core faculty and curriculum director for Inpatient Medicine and Pediatrics. Another hat he wears is Director of our innovative simulation curriculum, which includes both high fidelity procedural sims and the largest standardized patient program in the region! Outside of work, Dr. Martinez is passionate about surfing at the coast and advocating for health and justice for our Latinx community. Pictured here is one of his regular appearances on a local Spanish-language radio station, talking about pediatric care. And also pictured is his hairless cat, Xochi.

Hablamos español! Dr. Kate Feibusch, Director of our Global Health curriculum and Community Medicine Fellowship, teaches our residents medical Spanish. Our community is over 25% Latinx/Spanish-speaking, and resident and faculty who are fluent may have 40-60% of their patient panel comprised of Latinx/Spanish-speaking patients. Studies show that URM or non-English speaking patients cared for by race- and/or language-concordant physicians have improved trust, satisfaction, comprehension, chronic disease management, and follow up with their care. While it’s not necessary to know Spanish to practice good medicine in our community, it’s very helpful. It also helps that nearly all of our FMC medical assistants are bilingual/bicultural. #representationmatters #medicalspanish #lasaludpermanente #communityhealth #patientcenteredcare
