First field work in over a year officially approved by CSUF! Headed to the Carrizo Plain to collect sediment cores from a sag pond on the San Andreas Fault. Thanks to Southern California Earthquake Center (SCEC) for funding. Here's to getting some mud!!!
Come hear me talk about how we study past climate to learn about future climate. Plus, I talk about mud.
Warning. This Twit contains obvious self promotion. I am happy to have surpassed my prior highest yearly citations. Small potatoes by comparison to my colleagues, but it still makes me happy. @CSUFGeology @csuf none of this is possible without you awesome CAL state Fullerton students!!
We welcome Christian Novich - the lab's 40th BS thesis student (57th overall). Topic? CA past climate - what a surprise! Cal State Fullerton Dept. of Geological Sciences
Dr. Darren Larsen Occidental College is speaking Csuf Geology Dec 2 via Zoom at 4pm PST on "Holocene glacier fluctuations in the Teton Range, Wyoming: patterns and potential drivers." If interested, message me for a Zoom link. Here is his recent paper: https://advances.sciencemag.org/content/6/47/eabc7661
Happy Thanksgiving from the Kirby Lab.Happy Thanksgiving from the Kirby Lab.
Meet the Faculty Day TODAY at 4pm in the Department of Geological Sciences. Same seminar Zoom as other seminars. Now is the time to think about your REQUIRED BS thesis and thesis advisor. Cal State Fullerton Dept. of Geological Sciences California State University, Fullerton
Kirby lab temporarily moved to Wyoming. Quite a different scene.
Less than 16 months into her MS thesis at UMinn, Ms. Judith Avila (CSUF BS ’19) is a co-author on a Nature Geoscience article focusing on her on-going research ( https://www.nature.com/articles/s41561-020-00664-2 ). That is pretty cool. Nothing like seeing your students exceed you own successes. Cal State Fullerton Dept. of Geological Sciences
We welcome Ashley Scholder to the @csuf Paleoclimatology Lab for her undergraduate thesis. Lake Elsinore Holocene floods - we're coming for you! @CSUFGeology @CtyLakeElsinore
Discussing fundraising for @CSUFGeology @csuf @csufcnsm. We are gutting and renovating McCarthy Hall Floor 2...mostly geology and biology. Turns out you can have a faculty office named after you for a cool $25k - over five years. Anyone want to name my office?? Better yet, sign up to donate $5-10 per month directly from your bank account to GEOLOGY. Relatively painless. 1-2 cups of coffee per month! Once you get used to philanthropy, you'll find it rewarding. I do it! And, it is a small way to give back to your department that gave so much to you. https://giving.fullerton.edu/
Seminar TODAY September 23. 4pm. ZOOM. Dr. Callan Bentley (Piedmont Virginia Community College) - Visualization in geology: a brief history, best practices, & dispatches from the future. Email me if you want the Zoom link.
Ms. Daisy Quiroz has been selected as an LSAMP Research Scholar for the 2020-2021 Academic Year working with Professor Kirby. Yahoo! Daisy is working on Big Lake's Holocene record for her undergraduate thesis! Well done Daisy!

Two CSUF Dept of Geological Sciences undergraduate thesis students got started today in the lab...both on Big Lake, CA. Tracy Donelli and Daisy Quiroz. Two of a 4 core transect from the middle to the lake's edge. Cal State Fullerton Dept. of Geological Sciences California State University, Fullerton National Science Foundation (NSF)

Education in 2020.... Teaching grad students about sediment coring equipment - outside in masks.
One of my time management rules in academics. I won’t make my job harder to maker your job easier. @csuf @CSUFGeology @csufcnsm
Does this take place at Big Lake? hahahha
CONGRATULATIONS Christine LaMunyon! Undergraduate thesis officially done! "A Late Holocene Reconstruction of Water History in Northern California Using Sediments from Barley Lake, CA"
I just had a lab Zoom meeting (minus 3)...Is it weird that I got a little teary-eyed as we said goodbye? Nope - it's human. I could see and hear their challenges - for lack of a better word. I miss my amazing @csuf @CSUFGeology @csufcnsm @TitanPrezVirjee thesis students.
Leadership takes many forms! Today our @csuf President @TitanPrezVirjee "...has committed to contribute 10% of his monthly salary through the end of this cal yr to CSUF relief funds half to our student fund and half to our faculty and staff fund." Damn! Awesome! @JulieVirjee
