4 YEAR RUNNER : Francisco Zavaleta. Franny as I affectionately call him, has been a steady and reliable member of the team since he arrived four years ago. As a 9th grader he showed right away that hard work was something he was willing to embrace. That ethic had him running varsity as a sophomore. During the Covid created layoff months, it was clear when we returned that Franny had done very little laying around. He started this season in fantastic shape and has been the lead runner all the way thru. More important than all that, he’s coated that work with a thick layer of humility, teamwork and integrity. A great 4 years, he’s ready for the next chapter.
4YEAR RUNNER: Edgar Ortega Passion for running. If there has been a feature of Edgar’s time here at King it’s been his passion for the sport. He arrived with it and the flame has not been extinguished. That fire has led him to an outstanding 4 years here with contributions at the varsity level since his sophomore campaign and All Time marks and the 9th grade record in the 1600 in track. Edgar has been extremely coachable (passion can sometimes convince a person he doesn’t need help) and has consistently listened and applied what he’s been taught. With college running on the horizon he’s ready to take flight and we are confident what drove him to great heights here will do the same there
Congratulations to King XC alum, Kathryn Hammar ('17) who is finishing up her degree at UCR and has just been accepted into the PhD program at UCR in Electrical Engineering! Impressive back in the day (both in running and academically) and the race continues for Kathryn! #xc4LIFE
4 YEAR RUNNER: Bohdin Rush. Quietly and consistently Bohdin has fashioned a really nice four years of running cross country. He started like most do in the ranks of frosh soph and thru hard work and tenacity over time has risen to the varsity level which not all do. His improvement has been impressive and yet he has done it all with humility and a desire to get even more out of himself. Above all, he’s conducted himself with character and class and has represented King really well in his time here.
After nearly 15 months, Martin Luther King High School seniors Francisco Zavaleta and Edger Ortega at last toed the line with their cross-country teammates. On ...February 6th they raced alongside 33 other competitors, but winning was not their greatest objective. "It was exciting to be racing again," Zavaleta said after his first-place finish on the three mile course at MLK High School's campus. - Cross-country is one of five sports including track, swimming, tennis and golf that is allowed to compete despite the county's COVID-19 Purple Tier status. All other CIF-SS sports can not resume until positive test results decline. - Issue 11 See more
4 YEAR RUNNER: Grace Lowry. Everyone needs grace. Both the idea and the person. Grace the idea is when an undeserved gift is given. You get something amazing that you know you couldn’t earn if you tried. Grace the person is the one in the picture. She’s spent four years with King XC smiling, contributing , laughing, living and bringing joy to those around her. She overcame a broken ankle that took away her sophomore season to return as a junior and continue happily on her way, leaving us all to marvel at her spirit of optimism. It’s impossible to be down when you’re aware that grace and Grace are present. We’ve been a better team because of her. Like I said, everyone needs grace. And in Grace we got both!
4 YEAR RUNNER: Justine Marshall. Justine’s time with us has been a story of grit, determination and improvement. As a freshman she watched and ran quietly, taking it all in. But by her sophomore year she seemed to have made up her mind that she was going to be all in and boy has she ever! Her commitment to the team and to her own development as an athlete has been a model for others to follow and emulate. In this crazy senior season, the pandemic seems to have hardly affected her goal to be the best she can be, to influence the team in positive ways and enjoy the journey even if Covid has thrown a few twists and turns into the path. Well done Justine! You’ve run and you’ve finished well!!

We will have a "zoom" meeting tomorrow, Saturday 7/25/20 at 10:00 AM for verbal communication regarding our plans for the Fall and the 2020 season. If you didn't get the link via an email, please email Coach Peters at [email protected] to get the access link to join in.
With the CIF announcement yesterday as to the Fall season postponement, there are likely a lot of questions. I have them too! Waiting for a coaches' meeting tomorrow with MLK's Athletic Director where hopefully some answers will be given. I'll have a "zoom" meeting at the end of the week to give an update - Coach Peters
