This week was a busy one! We hosted a virtual booth at CASBO 2021 and connected with some wonderful education professionals. It’s such a privilege to work with you all! We also carved out time to work from Lake Tahoe. The sunshine and views were perfect. Wherever and however you’re ending your week, happy Friday!

It’s a big day for one of the King team members! Rob, our Director of Demographics and Planning, just started classes for the School Facilities Leadership Academy (SFLA) through the Coalition for Adequate School Housing (CASH). During this nine-month program, Rob and his classmates will sharpen their leadership skills in school facilities planning, financing, construction management, and more. Jen, our Director of Finance and Business Development, participated in the academy a few years ago and found it incredibly valuable. She’s even taking the next step and serving as a mentor for another participant in this year’s SFLA cohort. Thanks to CASH for this amazing program and congratulations to Rob!

Did you know? Results for the 2020 Census are about to be released! This new data will trigger some important processes at many California schools. When new Census numbers are released, schools that have trustee areas must update their area boundaries to match the most recent data. Learn about the latest Census updates and how King helps schools in this process at https://engage.kinginc.com/cvra

It’s Black History Month and today we’re celebrating the contributions of Ruby Bridges to education. As one of the first African American children to attend newly-desegregated schools in 1960s Louisiana, Ruby faced ostracization and death threats at just 6 years old. Today, she is a civil rights activist, author, and speaker. Thanks to her bravery, American schools have been forever changed. We’ve come a long way since 1960, but there is still work to be done to make schools safe and equitable for all. Photo by Tom Dumont, with a bit of background color added.

We’re so proud to work with Chico Unified School District. Their staff have collaborated with us on several, complex funding projects. The District’s latest project repurposes an old cafeteria and builds a new cafeteria with Career Technical Education facilities. Today we attended a meeting about AB841, California’s new School Energy Efficiency Stimulus program. Here are a few key takeaways. The initial funding round opens in April and is reserved for schools in under-served communities. An underserved community can qualify based on local participation rates in the National School Lunch Program, household income, environmental health factors, or location on California Indian lands. Stay tuned!

Being able to help the next generation succeed in their learning environment, it’s kind of like a dream job, Jennifer Gibb, our Director of Finance & Business Development, on why she loves her work.

Is bond fatigue real? After the defeat of 2020’s Proposition 13, some analysts are beginning to wonder. While we hope this isn’t a longterm trend, we do see this as an opportunity to clearly communicate your District’s funding successes and needs. If your District is considering a 2022 bond measure, the time to prepare is now!

Check out these new career technical education facilities! We are excited to see the Engineering Design and Culinary facilities our client Castro Valley Unified recently built. They brought a vision for their school and we helped them fund it by securing $4.7 million in Career Technical Education Facilities Program (CTEFP) grants. Tomorrow is Election Day and we’re thinking about voting. We actually think about it a lot in our profession, thanks to the work we do to create trustee areas for districts. Trustee areas are an alternative to at-large voting for school boards. Electing a school board from trustee areas helps school districts comply with the California Voting Rights Act, leading to more balanced community representation. How does your school district elect its Board? #themoreyouknow #kinginc

Being data-driven can make a school facilities plan more impactful. Accurate enrollment and development projections help school districts plan most effectively for the right facilities for their students. Rob Murray, our Director of Demographics and Planning, says it best, every number always represents a living, breathing student who's living in that district. We are so grateful we get to empower schools with quality data and analysis. #education #schools #data #development

Check out the amazing classrooms at this site! The Chico Unified School District recently expanded the Kindergarten complex at Emma Wilson Elementary School. We’re excited to be working with the District Team to be proactive and successful in applying for matching State funding for these new classrooms. We fight passionately for funding for our district’s facilities because we know student resources like this are possible! #schoolfunding #forthekids

Occasionally you may hear us talking about GIS. So, what is it? GIS stands for geographic information systems, and it's essentially a way to combine mapping and data analysis to unlock powerful information and effective... visualizations. GIS mapping and analysis heavily informs our work with Census demographics, mapping district boundaries and student enrollment trends, and identifying potential development sites. In turn, all these activities help districts make informed decisions and plan for funding opportunities. #gis #hereforyou #forthekids See more

Governor Newsom recently signed AB 841 to help schools update their plumbing and HVAC systems, bringing cleaner air and water to students. The bill compels California’s three major utility companies to collect a tariff on electric bills and redistribute the... funds for electric vehicle infrastructure and school improvements. The program is projected to provide $2 billion in funding over three years and will focus on schools near freeways or in underserved communities. Applications are expected to open April 1, 2021. We’ll be sending email updates as more details become available. Sign up for our updates at https://kinginc.com/contact/ #kinginc #schoolfacilities #schoolfunding

Did you know in the 2019-20 school year there were 6,163,001 students in public schools in California? So many of these districts are underfunded and are in need of critical repairs. That’s why we do what we do: to identify funding that may have been previously unidentified and to bring equity and safe facilities for all children. #kinginc #schoolfacilities

In 2018, the Camp Fire nearly destroyed Paradise, California. This week we were honored to meet with our client, Paradise Unified School District, and were both humbled and inspired by their strength, optimism, and fierce determination to rebuild their schools, and by doing so, their community. Our team is grateful to have the opportunity to partner with them to secure the State funding needed to support their efforts. #kingconsulting #hereforyou

Our team is incredibly proud and grateful to have worked with 8 school districts helping to write Career Technical Education Facility Program grants, and assist them with the complex processing of the applications through the various State agencies. We are excited to announce that yesterday, the State Allocation Board approved 17 applications for these school districts, who will receive $27.4 Million in State CTEFP funding.
