In honor of Black History month, we’re shining the spotlight on Black Americans whose contributions have made it possible for us to live our mission of providing extraordinary service and compassionate care. Mary Mahoney, RN, was the first black woman awarded a nursing degree and is credited as America's first Black professional nurse. Mary graduated from the Boston-based New England Hospital for Women and Children's training school for nurses in 1879 and became one of the first black members of the American Nurses Association. In addition to her pioneering efforts in nursing, she is recognized for her role in the women's suffrage movement.
