Kinderhaus

This week we had a volcano erupting at Kinderhaus. The previous week our kids built a big volcano out of paper maché and painted it. On Tuesday it was time for the big breakout.

Yesterday we learned about St. David's Day, a holiday that is celebrated in Wales. For this occasion the children made some lovespoons with specific messages for their loved ones using special symbols.

Last week our Kinderhaus children were busy to create some art around Chinese New Year and Valentines Day. We crafted different kind of hearts to give to loved ones, and small and a big dragon to celebrate the holidays. Happy Chinese New Year and a happy Valentines Day

Fitting to the rainy season the children made some rain clouds out of lampions, paint and cotton balls. We created big and small clouds that are now raining inside Kinderhaus.

Children are architects. They build houses, garages, castles, towers and all different kind of buildings. They don't need much, just some kind of blocks and they will let their imagination run wild.

Our kids have been busy preparing for christmas. Together me made little gingerbread houses, baked some gingerbread men and each child crafted a little surprise for their parents. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year

This weekend Nikolaus came to Kinderhaus. Last week we listened to the story of Nikolaus and before the weekend the children cleaned their house shoes and put them on our windowsill for Nikolaus to see.

With Christmas coming up Kinderhaus is slowly turning festive. We made an advent wreath and christmas trees to decorate. We also made an advent mailbox that has every day a little surprise for a child inside.

Going into November we prepared for the celebration of St. Martin on Nov. 11th. We played the story of St. Martin and talked about how to be kind to each other. All kids made their own lanterns to bring a little light into the darker season of the year.

Last week we talked about Thanksgiving and the meaning of being thankful for something. The children were thankful for their families, to be able to play with their friends or just to climb outside on the playground. Together we found a lot of things that we are thankful for, even in this challenging time. So, what are you thankful for? Happy Thanksgiving

Happy Halloween and Día de los Muertos. We prepared and celebrated these holidays at Kinderhaus with bats, spiders and skeletons. We also created a little altar in our classroom and lots of flowers.

How are you feeling today? Talking with your child about feelings is very important and easy to include into a daily schedule. The more children talk about their feelings and the differences the easier it gets for them to recognize and express their own feelings.

Fall arrived at Kinderhaus and with that some hay balls to climb on and pumpkins to paint. We also looked inside a pumpkin and found lots of pumpkin seeds. They are delicious to eat and great to make art with.

Did you know that the moon has a lot of different colors? We took a closer look at the moon and found out, that depending on how the light is hitting the moon it looks different.

Our classroom is slowly turning into space. We created in the last weeks a lot of planets, rockets and some space suits.

We are experimenting with paint and trying out all the different ways of doing some art. We are using paint brushes, marbles or just let the paint flow over the paper. Since our children are interested in rockets and space we created a big space painting with sponges.

Since we are back from our summer break our young ones used the last two weeks to explore Kinderhaus, our toys and activities with all their senses. Since our Kinderhaus-Stuffies are still traveling through Europe we began to wonder: "How do they travel? With a car, a boat, a plane or train? With help or without?" So we started to make different kinds of transportation like hot-air balloons and boats. We even started to think about a unique car that can fly and swim.

Papier-mâché was a lot of fun to make - being both a sensory and and art activity - and to paint! Also, our water colors looked beautiful on the new recycled paper plates and bowls!

Our summers are always ocean-themed! Seaweed and sea creatures on the windows, submarines, sharks and coral reefs on the board, a viking ship on the backyard...and check out the painted sand dollars!

Last week we said "Good Bye" to our graduates. Before that we were busy, preparing for that big step. They were able to paint one tile for our Alumni Wall, decorate their own Schultüte while the kids at Kinderhaus made a sign, a banner and a boat to carry their Schultüten.

This week we made our own natural paint. For that we used some clear glue, water and added turmeric, curry, ground coffee, cinnamon, paprika and beet/ the water from cooking beets. Not only was it fun to make and paint with our own colors but the paintings also smelled really good.

Last week we used the biggest canvas we have at Kinderhaus- our windows. The kids had a lot of fun painting with finger paint on the windows to show our neighborhood that we are back. It is always a great activity- feeling the paint on the hands, on the window and try to reach at high as possible.

Getting ready for re-opening. Individual art baskets and sensory buckets, two building areas and and the stuffies still on their trip through Europe: Kinderhaus might look a little different, but I am sure we will have as much fun!
