I'm running for City Council in Livermore! Follow along on my other account @kiickitup to learn more! Covid is still keeping me from taking family photos the way I want to, but here is a way can still serve families in the Tri-Valley! Visit brittnikiick.com for all the details!
Things happening over on this page!
I won't be posting here for a while. I am working on some big things and it will all be clear on the @kiickitup page. The thing is, during Covid-19 I can't comfortably take family photos of new clients in a way that brings me joy or gives you the experience you are used to. No more teaching your kids how to use my camera. No more holding hands with your little one who has become my new bestie the way back to the car. I will be back, just not sure when. Other photographers ar...e more comfortable with the new situation and it's matches their previous shooting style better. If you are a past client that wants to talk, please DM me over on the other account. If your family knows me, it will be easier to get that connection, but for a new child who has no idea who I am, it just doesn't make sense for me right now. I appreciate your understanding and I am happy to send you to other photogs if you are a new client wanting recommendations. I hope to see you on the other page! . . . #livermorefamilyphotographer #livermore #livermorephotographer See more
I will have to have serious conversations with my son. Many over his lifetime. About sexuality. About consent. About substance use. About how to interact with the police. But my conversations about authority will be far different than my family and friends with darker skin. Mothers of black and brown sons HAVE to talk about police brutality and violence. They will remind their sons to be polite and communicate, call him sir, make sure he can see your hands, and even then, the...y can't guarantee their babies will live. I could choose to never talk to him about the police and statistically he would be fine. But I will make the choice to have those explicit conversations, about how to safely intervene when he sees injustice. If he can not safely intervene, how to bare witness, and seek justice, using the privilege that comes with his skin color for good. Mothers of black and brown sons worry about them jogging, birdwatching, walking home with a bag of Skittles. I too will worry plenty about my son, but never about any of those things. Mothers of white children do not get to "sit this one out" because nothing will change if we don't start talking about this. But how?! What do I say?! At his age, 3 we talk about color. We need to notice and appreciate differences. When we avoid, it becomes taboo, which is often interpreted as bad to a child. Simple things like "My skin is darker than your skin. Miss Elaina's skin is darker than Prince Wednesday. They are both beautiful." We read books with black children as the protagonist, we watch children's shows with black characters. Cora (5) gets more detailed conversations. We read about Ruby Bridges, she comments about how her classroom has lots of different skin colors. She says "I'm glad I didn't live way back when Ruby did, she I like have friends that look different than me". I tell her that Ruby is still alive. She is younger than GG. That people still hurt and exclude others because of their skin. But she can help. By learning, listening and being an ally. They are not too young. You can talk to them. Please do. It's the only way anything will change. . . #blacklivesmatter #talkaboutit #livermorefamilyphotographer See more
