When we think of child welfare, we think of the reasons a child is removed; that it's for their welfare. Foster Fact Friday: While Black children make up 7% of LA County, they account for 1-in-4 children in the L.A. County foster care system, suggesting race is a bigger factor with youth in foster care than poverty. Because of that, we're Celebrating Black Youth Storytellers this Black History Month with a special event next Thursday, the 18th! Moderated by Malcolm-Jamal Warner, we will be screening 2 short films that were written & acted in by youth in foster care from the KITS... program, followed by a conversation with our young storytellers: BROWN A film about 5 hopeful high school students who find their plans derailed as they encounter the systematic setbacks of being Brown in America. System Failure A film about a young high school boy who is forced to publicly confront a painful secret that will shed a light on the system that failed him. After the screening, you'll meet our young filmmakers in a Q&A, alongside Malcolm-Jamal Warner, as they discuss what it means to be foster youth, & BIPOC, in today's society & the impact they hope their films leave you with.
