Impact in our lives comes in different ways. Motivated by her high school teachers, Hankyul clears the path for students as high a school English teacher and as a Kid City (fem)entor. "My high school English teachers were the first to open my eyes to the diversity in literature. I was no longer reading tales where I had nothing in common with the dominant protagonists, but I was surfing the minds of characters who looked and sounded like me. I finally felt like I was apar...t of this field and sought to explore that representation in college. ... I've had the privilege of being surrounded by strong femtors who've guide me through my many transitions in life, and I seek to do the same with young students who face a world of daunting opportunities in front of them. I lead with empathy, as a thought partner, armed with knowing that the student in front of me already possesses the tools to successfully take their next steps in life." We are so grateful for you Hankyul!! Want to #ClearThePath for a Kid City participant? NEW INTERN We are super excited to announce one of our two new USC Social Work interns for the entire 2021 year! Christine Oh is joining the Kid City team and has already begun working with students this semester. Here is a message from Christine: Hi everyone! My name is Christine Oh, and I'm excited to work with you all this year. I use she/her/hers pronouns and was born in Seoul, Korea but raised in Los Angeles - since I came when I was three, I put more emphasis in ..."American" when I say I'm Korean American. I graduated from Golden Valley High School in Santa Clarita, then moved up to Davis, CA to attend UC Davis where I double majored in Sociology and Philosophy. Now, I'm back at Santa Clarita and am working on my Master's in Social Work at USC. When I'm not studying or working, I like to make stickers, watch anime, play indie games, or try to teach my cat new tricks. I wanted to study social work because as a first-gen college student and formerly undocumented individual, I often felt alone in the hardhips that came with my identity. I wanted to empower other individuals who experience similar hardships and help them navigate through the resources I didn't have. Which brings me here today! I hope that I can use my expertise and education to help staff, mentors, students, and families in nurturing their mental health, especially in a turbulent time like the present.
