Repost from @asianlegacylibrary In one sense, our mission to preserve timeless wisdomand share it with everyone around the globeis something that takes place anywhere there’s an internet connection. Yet in another, deeply profound sense, it’s something that’s taking place here, at the National Library of Mongolia. Since 1921, the library has carried out the mandate of safeguarding Mongolia’s incredibly vast and unique written heritage. This collection consists of untold n...umbers of precious texts from all parts of Asia, many of which accumulated over the centuries under the rule of the largest empire in history, the Khans. Despite containing the Mongolian Tanjur, a collection of some 3,427 commentaries on Buddhist texts from Indian and Tibetan masters that was added to UNESCO’s Memory of the World Register in 2011, a large portion of the library is in need of cleaning, cataloguing, digitization, and physical safeguarding for future generations. Thanks to generous support from @khyentsefoundation, ALL has been performing this work since 2018, in collaboration with Buddhist Digital Resource Center @buddhist_archive and the Library’s brilliant team of historians and preservationists. So far, 5,297 volumes have been catalogued. 2,922 of these have been digitized and are accessible within our Inner Asian Collection, but there is still years’ worth of work to be done.

KF SPOTLIGHT | BUDDHA'S TEN LIVES We are pleased to share with you this article and accompanying images from the ten Jtakas Buddha’s ten lives by Professor Peter Skilling and Santi Pakdeekham. The article was recently published in the Journal of the Siam Society, Vol. 109, Pt. 2, 2021. In this article, we describe two sets of wood panel paintings kept at Wat Ban Khong in Ratchaburi province. Dating from the Sixth Reign, the paintings are latter-day representatives of an... older genre that formerly was popular in central Siam. They stand at the cusp of tradition and modernity, of the provincial and the urban. A polychrome set depicts the first nine of the Ten Jtakas, while a gilt lacquer set is devoted to the tenth and last, Vessantara or the Great Birth. Our aim is to bring these paintings to the attention and appreciation of the interested public. Space does not permit us to go into social and art-historical details or to compare conception and technique to the Jtaka paintings of the region or the capital. We hope that this presentation of visual culture will lead specialists to give more attention to the local paintings of the period. Read the full article and view the wood panel paintings through the KF website: https://khyentsefoundation.org/ten-jatakas-at-wat-ban-khon/

University of British Columbia | Be the Refuge: Raising the Voices of Asian American Buddhists #NewsfromKhyentseFoundationAcademicNetworks #OnlineLectures... Despite the fact that two thirds of U.S. Buddhists identify as Asian American, mainstream perceptions about what it means to be Buddhist in America often whitewash and invisibilize the diverse, inclusive, and intersectional communities that lie at the heart of American Buddhism. Chenxing Han's book, Be the Refuge (North Atlantic Books) is both critique and celebration, calling out the erasure of Asian American Buddhists while uplifting the complexity and nuance of their authentic stories and vital, thriving communities. Drawn from in-depth interviews with a pan-ethnic, pan-Buddhist group, Be the Refuge is the first book to center young Asian American Buddhists’ own voices. University of California, Berkeley | Where Was Wine Drunk in Gandhara? New Insights into Reveling Scenes in the light of a Stylistic Analysis #NewsfromKhyentseFoundationAcademicNetworks #OnlineLectures... Date: Friday, April 16th, 12pm (PST) Jessie Pons, Ruhr Universität Bochum This presentation will outline some of the results of research on the identification and characterization of Gandharan sculptural styles and highlight how a traditional stylistic analysis can contribute to broader questions about Gandharan art, from the provenance of the artefacts to the signification of the scenes they represent. As a preamble, it will present the methodological approach underlying the stylistic study and sketch a map of the sculptural languages circumscribed across Gandhara. It will subsequently examine a case-studythe depiction of reveling scenesand illustrate how an emphasis on patterns of geographic distribution may add to the discussion on phenomena of cultural and religious interaction in the region. It will further show how attention to formal and iconographic variations canperhaps predictablyinform us on the provenance of pieces found outside of archaeological contexts and thereby invite to reflect on the methodological frameworks within which we approach these variations. News from Shambhala Publications I am deeply honoured and grateful for the opportunity to remark on the writings of the eminent teachers of Larung Gar, especially the heart sons of the great and formidable Kyabje Khenchen Jigme Phuntsok Rinpoche. My observations of both Khenpo Tsultrim Lodro and Khenpo Sodargye over the years have turned gradually to admiration and then to real veneration. Their ‘walk the talk’ approach to the dharma they teach gives great hope to all foll...owers of the Buddhadharma. And so, I want to express my joy that having their words now in printed form will provide at least a glimpse of the unfathomable and infinite activity of these great teachers from Larung Gar. Dzongsar Jamyang Khyentse Rinpoche Happy Publication Day to Voices from Larung Gar edited by Holly Gayley! This collection of talks and writings offers profound wisdom from one of the largest and most dynamic Buddhist communities in the world. University of California, Berkeley | The last PlaSena paita, Gautamarbhadra, at the ends of the Buddhist earth #NewsfromKhyentseFoundationAcademicNetworks #OnlineLectures... Thursday, April 8, 2021, 5pm PST Iain Sinclair, Nan Tien Institute/The University of Queensland Gautamar, also known as Gautamarbhadra, was a young member of the cohort that fled the destruction of the last teaching monasteries on the Indian subcontinent. In Nepal he took up residence in Guita, an ancient monastic compound. A medieval avadna relating to this monastery was most likely written by Gautamar there. Gautamar also conferred with his fellow exiles in Nepal, such as Vibhticandra, and transmitted dozens of texts and practices to visiting Tibetans. They include works pertaining to the Klacakra and Vajrval/Kriysamuccaya tantric systems. Gautamar visited Sa skya and his name reached as far as Beijing. However, Gautamar was not like the many other thirteenth-century Indian Buddhists whose religion lived on only in the translations of the Tibetan canon. After avoiding disasters in the Himalayas and fundamentalization in mainland Southeast Asia, Gautamar sailed to the ends of the Buddhist earth, reaching the islands of the Malay Archipelago. There, distinctive aspects of his expertise flourished: a revival of the Malay eight-armed bodhisattva Amoghapa, and a new cult of the ravenous deity Vajramahkla. Gautamar can also be linked to a paita who is said in the Sejarah Melayu to have co-founded a new dynasty in Sumatra. This lecture presents a range of previously unpublished findings on precolonial transnational networks, late Buddhism, Sanskrit literature and epigraphy, and the Indo-Malay kings. Rinpoche on Resilience | Words of Wisdom Series 3 We need to learn to be resilient. Fortunately, there are ways to develop resilience when we get hurteven when we collapse and are totally broken. We see it in nature. There are bugs that when you squish them look almost dead, but somehow, they move and actually become strong and then fly away. Or if you cut and badly damage a tree, it is so resilient that it grows again even better than before. University of British Columbia | The Mid-Century Modern: Jdo Shinsh and the Making of American Buddhism #NewsfromKhyentseFoundationAcademicNetworks #OnlineLectures... "Jdo Shinsh Young Buddhist Associations before, during, and long after the illegal war-time incarceration of Japanese Americans actively promoted Buddhism as part of their contribution to American culture. Despite practicing American Buddhism for fifty years before Kerouac’s Dharma Bums, it is the Beat poets and D.T. Suzuki who are regularly credited with popularizing Buddhism in the United States. In this presentation, I explore how the narrative of American Buddhist history is altered when we center the invisiblized labor of marginalized persons who made possible the conditions for Buddhism’s dissemination and popularization in the later half of the twentieth century." - Dr. Scott Mitchell DATE: Monday, March 22, 2021 TIME: 6:00 PM PST REGISTRATION: https://ubc.zoom.us///u5woduioqTktE9196b-LfkVNJvdFO9xV2aOl
