May you be safe and blessed on this, the day we celebrate or independence, and that which our founding fathers stood for, may those visions live on... While we become better than we are as individuals, citizens, and a nation as a whole....

We as tax professionals often get asked "How long shall I keep my tax records"? Generally speaking the statute for CA returns expires after 4 years, so we recommend that the supporting details be held for 5 years, just to have a one year cushion. However, if something is being depreciated (usually for business or investment property deductions) the supporting details should be saved for 5 years past the last year of depreciation for that item. For example, if an item place...d on the 2015 return, will be depreciated for 5 years, the last year of depreciation would be 2019, and thus should be saved for 5 more years, and can be destroyed in 2025. That being said... It is recommended that tax returns themselves, never be destroyed and should be held until 5 years after the last living person on the return has passed. (Lots of research and information can be derived from the tax return). For more information, please visit the IRS page that addresses this matter specifically...
