UPDATE: Due to high winds, this burn is postponed. We will provide more information when a date with more favorable weather conditions can be determined. Pending a successful test fire, ignitions are planned on a private property in Southeast Weed tomorrow, 4/20/2021. Smoke from the burn is expected to drift in various directions, and may be visible from I-5, Weed, and Mt. Shasta. It’s important to note that, while conditions are dry, the burn is a permitted one, and Siskiyou... Prescribed Burn Association is closely monitoring weather and fuel conditions in real-time. Additionally, the SPBA will stage many qualified firefighting resources at the burn, in case they’re needed. The Karuk Tribe is providing some of those resources to support this burn. As always, firefighter and community safety are our number one priority. In the right conditions, an intentional, low-intensity burn in the Wildland Urban Interface of Weed will make all of us safer from destructive wildfires. Please contact Shasta Valley Resource Conservation District’s Public Information Officer Rod Dowse with any questions or concerns: 530-598-1253, and help spread the word. KARUK TRIBE STATEMENT ON KLAMATH OPERATIONS PLAN Happy Camp, CA In the face of what may be the worst drought in modern history, the United States Department of Interior released a Temporary Operations Plan for the Klamath Irrigation Project. The plan dramatically curtails irrigation diversions to less than 10% of demand while failing to meet the biological needs of salmon fisheries downstream. Karuk Chairman Russell ‘Buster’ Attebery made the following statement:... We appreciate the efforts of the Biden Administration to manage water resources in the face of this natural disaster. We know it is impossible to meet everyone’s water needs when the rains don’t come. For the Karuk Tribe, this is about more than economic survival. Our cultural identity is intimately linked to the salmon, sturgeon, steelhead, and lamprey. The Karuk Tribe is committed to working with federal agencies, fellow Tribes, and our neighbors in the farming and ranching communities to survive this disaster. We call on Congress to provide disaster relief to all affected communities and to invest in the river restoration and water conservation efforts that acknowledge the reality of climate change and equitably balances water use. In a joint statement issued today, the CDC and FDA recommended a pause in the use of the Johnson & Johnson (Janssen) single-dose vaccine. This is to allow for an investigation into a potential link between this vaccine and a type of blood clot called cerebral venous sinus thrombosis (CVST). There have been more than 6.8 million doses of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine administered in the U.S. The potential side effect has been observed among six women, between the ages of 18 an...d 48, with symptoms occurring 6 to 13 days after vaccination. While the possible side effect is rare, out of an abundance of caution, the Karuk Tribe will be pausing the use of the vaccine as recommended by the CDC and FDA. If you already have an appointment at one of our health clinics or vaccination events to receive the Johnson & Johnson vaccine, we will be offering the two-dose Modern Vaccine as a substitute. If you would prefer to reschedule, please call the number you used to book your appointment. If you have already received the Johnson & Johnson vaccine and experience severe headache, abdominal pain, leg pain, or shortness of breath within three weeks of your vaccination, please contact your health care provider. The Karuk Tribe will continue to provide updates on this issue as information becomes available.

Spring is here, and this year the Karuk Tribe Department of Natural Resources is carrying forward the success form the Tishanik Community Farm and food distribution efforts started last spring as a response to the Covid-19 Pandemic. Although we are geared up to provide more nutritious, organically grown fruits and vegetables, we still depend on community support through donations and volunteer effort. Every Saturday in April will be a volunteer day on the farm in Orleans, including tomorrow April 3rd. If you’re interested in contributing to these efforts, contact Jasmine Harvey at [email protected]
