Our training program lasts less than a year, through a single savings cycle. Most groups save together for a year, share out their savings and profits annually, and then reconstitute the group for the next cycle. Reconstituting provides a chance to make membership changes, update the constitution, and elect new leadership. Our training, based on best practices, covers management committee roles, elections, setting share and social fund prices, forming a constitution, record-k...eeping, transparency, loan portfolio quality, goal setting, prudent borrowing, budgeting, conflict resolution, and decision making. Our groups report that, after the training, the annual share-out goes more quickly, their profit is clear, and the share-out is trusted because of better record-keeping and transparency. In addition, members speak up more and participate actively in group decisions, and savings have increased and loans are larger and more productive. - Nosso programa de treinamento para os grupos de poupança é projetado para durar aproximadamente 1 ano, em um único ciclo de poupança. An example of the potential impact of savings groups is a local widow, mother, midwife, and entrepreneur, Veronica Moshi. She started with a savings group in 2003 and even after the death of her husband, she was able to afford additional agricultural training, increase her crop production, upgrade her home, build a second building for rental income, open a small retail shop, and support all four of her children to get their education! Our financial services program is moving along nicely under the guidance of our program manager, Victoria Kachulu. Victoria has a bachelor's degree in business administration and has studied savings groups and federations with our microfinance consulting expert, Stella Tunganzara. Over the next several posts we will give you a quick overview of our work. First, the overarching objective of the program is to create and strengthen the financial security of the communities we se...rve. We aim to increase access to capital for at least 25% of households by leveragingsavings groups, a well-known platform for economic and social change. Savings groups are comprised of people known to one another who save together, offer microloans to members from their aggregate savings, and generate profit by charging interest on the loans. They are self-governed, defining their own savings increments called shares, contributions to emergency funds called social funds, and their own rules of engagement such as attendance requirements, late loan repayment fees, etc. We have 12 savings groups currently in the program. Savings groups tend to be primarily women and our groups are no exception. 82% of our members are women. Now that we have a good handle on our fundraising results, we want to share with you our overall project plan for the year. To that end we have added a new page to our website, Karimu 2021 Plan: https://karimufoundation.org//karimu-2021-goals-and-progre Here we will provide an overview of all projects by ward and their current status. We expect to update the web page approximately every other month, but at least quarterly. Remember, we are a completely volunteer organizatio...n! Some projects shown may not be fully funded, but it is our hope that they will be by mid year. In addition, there has been an increase in patients admitted to hospitals across the country with COVID-19 like symptoms, indicating that the pandemic could be spreading. This is sadly also true in Ayalagaya and Arri wards. We are once again taking precautions, for example, avoiding large indoor meetings, which is impacting some plans. Our staff on the ground tells us that many of the precautions and guidance from our 2020 COVID-19 project continue to be applied broadly: a strong indication that the project was (and still is) extremely impactful. - Agora que temos um bom controle sobre os resultados da arrecadação de fundos, queremos compartilhar com vocês nosso plano geral 2021. Thirteen years ago when my husband, Don, and I founded Karimu we did not think that someday it would have such a significant impact on the community where we work. What we began would never have continued if not for the resilience, generosity, and hard work of the people of Ayalgaya, our dedicated volunteers, and our Kaheso employees. The people of Ayalagaya often say that they have nothing to give in gratitude for what Karimu has done for the community, to which I reply, "You have given so much---you have changed my life forever."

Our in-country manager, Shau Erro Ae, attended a government meeting this month recognizing NGOs operating in the Manyara region. To our delight and to the credit of our donors, volunteers, staff, and community partners, Karimu was recognized as the #1 NGO whose projects are having a major and positive impact on the community. The recognition continues to affirm the Karimu operating model based on partnership, continuity, and sustainability. In January, the Dohom sub village and Arri ward leadership asked Karimu’s assistance in completing bathroom construction for the Dohom primary school. From our 2019 volunteer visit, we knew their bathrooms were nothing more than boards over a hole in the ground: reeking and muddy and unhygienic. The school would have been closed by the government without new bathrooms. The Dohom community raised money for the reconstruction and the government contributed an additional amount,... but they underestimated the cost. They completed the foundations, walls, and roofs, but need help with the finishing tasks: painting, fixtures, tiles... We are very happy that they are building the bathrooms along the lines of those we have built in Ayalagaya including flush toilets, sinks, and facilities that will support girls’ menstrual cycles. Since there is no running water, the community has purchased a generator to pump water into the onsite water tank. Karimu contributed $3000 to the project completion which we hope will be this month. Durante a visita dos voluntários em 2019, vimos que seus banheiros nada mais eram do que tábuas sobre um buraco no chão: fedorento, lamacento e anti-higiênico. A escola teria sido fechada pelo governo sem novos banheiros. A comunidade de Dohom arrecadou dinheiro para a reconstrução e o governo contribuiu com uma quantia adicional, mas eles subestimaram o custo. We began 2 bathroom projects at the end of 2020. Ufani Primary school student and teacher bathrooms and Ayalagaya Secondary teachers bathrooms. The completion of these projects will complete all planned school bathroom construction in Ayalagaya ward! Proper sanitation is critical for student health. Students are prepared to use the new facilities through classroom instruction. Many students do not have proper toilet facilities at home and must make due in a hole or in the bus...h using leaves, stones, or hands for wiping. Part of the agreement to receive bathrooms on campus is that students are taught the use of squat toilets, urinals, western toilets (for disabled children or menstruating girls), and handwashing. The schools must keep the bathrooms stocked with soap and must clean and maintain the facilities. We know that proper bathrooms and hygiene practices are contributing to increased student attendance and achievement. - Iniciamos 2 projetos de banheiros no final de 2020. Banheiros para alunos e professores da escola primária de Ufani e banheiros para professores do ensino médio de Ayalagaya. A conclusão desses projetos irá completar toda a construção planejada de banheiros escolares no bairro de Ayalagaya! O saneamento adequado é fundamental para a saúde do aluno. Os alunos estão preparados para usar as novas instalações por meio do ensino em sala de aula. Muitos alunos não têm instalações sanitárias adequadas em casa e devem fazer o vencimento em um buraco ou no mato usando folhas, pedras ou mãos para limpar. Parte do acordo para receber banheiros no campus é que os alunos aprendam a usar banheiros agachados, mictórios, banheiros ocidentais (para crianças com deficiência ou meninas menstruadas) e como lavar as mãos. As escolas devem manter os banheiros abastecidos com sabão e devem limpar e manter as instalações. I believe in the power of education. Not just to learn and develop a curiosity about the world, but to also discover our place in it. Through education, we come to know ourselves as individuals and also realize how strongly connected we are to one another. We feel this connection with our family, friends and community but experiencing this beyond the familiar can be life changing- it was for me. In 2014, as an educator and Karimu volunteer, I was excited to travel to Tanzania..., my first time on the African continent. I was looking forward to visiting the schools and interacting with students and teachers. What I never anticipated was feeling such a strong, joyous bond with people I had just met. Despite differences, culture and language, among them, it is what we shared as humans that connected us. Seven years later, the education projects are growing and expanding with many improvements and successes. We continue to work together across the continents as colleagues and friends so very grateful for this ever-growing, human bond that unites us and brings such great joy. Acredito no poder da educação. Não apenas para aprender e desenvolver curiosidade sobre o mundo, mas também para descobrir nosso lugar nele. Através da educação passamos a nos conhecer e a perceber como estamos fortemente conectados uns aos outros. We were able to break ground on the boys and girls hostels the end of last year. 2020 will be the last year that the students sleep on the floor in preparation for the national exam and the hostels are a requirement for opening a high school as high school students live at the school to focus on their studies. The hostels will be two story buildings. This is rare in Ayalagaya and requires metal beam construction as opposed to wood construction. Our structural engineer is bein...g very cautious to make sure everything is built for safety. Each building, one for girls and one for boys, will sleep 128 students and include showers and a walk-through to the existing on-campus bathrooms. Individual donor generosity plus the community’s cash contribution of $8761 has fully funded the hostel project. While the community contribution is generally ~10% of the total cost, it is a negotiated value. For this project we accepted ~5% as we are doing several projects concurrently so there is substantial stress on the community resources. Thank you to our generous donors!! To ensure longevity of investment, the community commits to maintaining the school buildings: cleaning, supplying bathrooms, monitoring structures and fixtures for problems, and repairing them. To date, this was primarily a Karimu-driven process whereby our staff would periodically inspect , identify, and track issues. However, this was not a satisfying solution for the schools nor our staff and had mixed results. In 2019 and 2020 the average days to fix an issue was 108 and ...102 respectively. We asked the school and village leadership to come up with a proposal that satisfies our needs to be able to validate how assets are being maintained while giving the schools more autonomy. They did not disappoint! We now have a school and village-driven process whereby all items on the maintenance checklist have teacher owners who monitor and note issues in a booklet kept in the head of the school's office. Repairs costing less than $45 will be completed within 30 days as they can be accommodated within the school discretionary funds while larger repairs will require community contribution and will take 2 months. Stay tuned for results! Para garantir a longevidade do investimento, a comunidade se compromete com a limpeza e manutenção das escolas, monitorando problemas e executando reparos. Esse era principalmente um processo conduzido pela Karimu: nossa equipe inspecionava, identificava e rastreava problemas periodicamente. Em 2019 e 2020, a média de dias para corrigir um problema era de 108 e 102, respectivamente. Pedimos à escola e à liderança da vila que apresentassem uma proposta que pudesse validar a manutenção dos ativos, ao mesmo tempo que daria às escolas mais autonomia. Agora o processo é dirigido pela escola e pela vila: todos os itens da lista de verificação de manutenção têm professores responsáveis que monitoram e anotam os problemas em um caderno mantido na secretaria da escola. As we have mentioned, the community often provides materials for construction. You have, no doubt, seen pictures with piles of rock and brick in many posts. Have you ever wondered where all those bricks come from? To satisfy your curiosity, here are the steps: 1) The community will look for a location where the soil contains a good amount of clay.2) The clay soil is mixed with water to create a paste.3) The paste is molded into bricks by pouring it into a rectangular frame.... 4) The frame is lifted, and the wet bricks stay on the ground to dry in the sun, usually for a few days.5) The bricks are then carefully stacked into a huge pile with space underneath them to accommodate a set of fires.6) The stack is covered with mud to retain the heat.7) The fires are prepared and set, baking the bricks to ensure resistance and durability, usually all day long. Like Gajal, we also began construction at Haysam Primary School last quarter. And like Gajal, this is the 1st phase. We expect to need ~13 classrooms for the Haysam students overall, but we always try to plan for long term growth on the site in the design.
