Shalom Uvracha. Parashat Vaera continues the story of the exodus from Egypt. I found some very deep explanations of the plagues which occur. We will discuss the first 4. The first plague was with blood, which happened in the month of Tammuz. The zodiac sign of Tammuz is ‘Cancer’. Pharaoh and the Egyptians were very knowledgeable about the stars and their signs. This intimate knowledge empowered Pharaoh and the Egyptians, as he claimed, ‘the nile river is mine, I have formed ...Continue reading

Shalom. The Torah explores the spiritual and physical elements of Malchut- ‘Kingship’. Kabbalah explores the manifestation of this kingship in the spiritual realms and in the physical world. Leaders and rulers throughout history have manifested this spiritual power. As with most aspects of our world, there is a mixture of good and evil in this ‘rulership’ as well. This is why the Torah is so specific in describing the conduct expected of a King. The power of Joseph and Judah ...Continue reading

BSD Shalom, The days between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur are called the days of returning. They are blessed with a special energy and power to help us return to the path of Hashem and the Torah. The power of our efforts to return to Hashem in these days is stronger than in the other days of the year. Every individual is empowered to come closer to Hashem. Indeed this Shabbat is aptly named Shabbat Shuva- the Shabbat of return. Hashem exhorts us through the prophets to R...eturn, O Israel, to the Lord your God, for you have stumbled in your iniquity. Take words with yourselves and return to the Lord. Say, ‘You shall forgive all iniquity and teach us the good way.’ As always our energy and intent is affected by the words we are using in our lives. We speak of returning to arouse a deeper level of our beings to refocus itself on what truly matters in our lives. In response to our testimony, Hashem promises that he will reciprocate this energy towards us. I will love them freely, for My wrath has turned away from them. I will be like dew to Israel, they shall blossom like a rose, and it shall strike its roots like the Lebanon. Its branches shall go forth, and its beauty shall be like the olive tree, and its fragrance like the LebanonWho is wise and will understand these, discerning and will know them; for the ways of the Lord are straight, and the righteous shall walk in them. For the Parasha, we read the powerful song of Haazinu. It describes Moses’ calling on the heavens and earth as witnesses of our covenant with Hashem. About the verse, the Lord guided them alone, and there was no alien deity with Him, Onkelos translates: Hashem will guide them in the renewed world, and no foreign entities will exist before him. Hashem created a world of apparent duality, where opposing and contradicting forces exist. The ultimate purpose of this is to achieve harmony between all the extremes. At times, as a nation we have not felt Hashem’s presence in a revealed way. We have endured difficult circumstances of large magnitude. Hashem promises us that this is only temporary. The goal we are working towards is our, and the world’s, unification with Hashem in a revealed way. This connection will be so strong that nothing will be able to disrupt it. We are seeing this process happen in real time. The world is becoming more and more transparent. The effects of our decisions and actions are being seen faster in our lives. This is all part of the preparation of the era of revelation of Hashem, when there will be no more opposing forces getting in the way of this deep and powerful relationship with Hashem, the creator of all. BSD Shalom, This week’s parasaha, Nitzavim, begins with these powerful words, You are all standing this day before the Lord, your God. The leaders of your tribes, your elders and your officers, every man of Israel; your young children, women, and your convert who is within your camp; both your woodcutters and your water drawers, that you may enter the covenant of the Lord, your God, and His oath, which the Lord, your God, is making with you this day, in order to establish yo...u this day as His people, and that He will be your God, as He spoke to you, and as He swore to your forefathers to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob. But not only with you am I making this covenant and this oath, but with those standing here with us today before the Lord, our God, and [also] with those who are not here with us, this day. This was the last day of Moshe’s life on this earth. For this reason, he gathered all of the children of Israel to hear his final testimony. The verse describes ten types of people in our nation, encompassing all the levels of the souls which represent our entire nation. In the spiritual sense, we are completely connected and tied up with one another. The Talmud states, All of (the people of) Israel are guarantors for each other. Our people are an entire body. Just as the head and the foot are connected and part of one body, so too all the souls are necessary and are what make up the beauty of our nation. We can only enter into a covenant when the entire nation is represented. Indeed, the strength needed to enter this covenant comes from the fact that we stand united, regardless of our differences. For this reason we always read this Torah Portion before Rosh Hashanah. On Rosh Hashanah, the entire world is being judged for the upcoming year. When we approach Hashem, our unity is what strengthens our prayers and lifts them up on high. While Hashem is unknowable and incomprehensible, we try to develop our limited understanding of Him. One way we try to understand is by using our associations, for example our concepts of fathers and mothers. As parents, almost nothing brings more joy to our hearts then when we see our children getting along with each other. Indeed, we even forgive them for things that may normally upset us when we see that it was a united act of siblings. So too we believe that Hashem, when He sees His nation in unity and prayer together, forgives us for our misdeeds, as He sees we are striving for peace and unity. We bless Rosh Hashanah on this Shabbat and Hashem is helping us do it. As the Talmud states, Hashem found no vessel better to hold ‘blessings’ than ‘Shalom’‘Peace.’ May Hashem bless us with love and joy that will usher in a wonderful and sweet new year, Amen! BSD Shalom, This week Torah portion states, Blessed be you in the city, and blessed be you in the field. The word for blessed in Hebrew is baruch. A more meaningful translation for baruch would be drawn down. This is related to the process of pulling down a grape vine to the ground to sprout forth another fruit-giving grape vine.... The Torah is telling us that our blessings should be expressed in the world, so that we may see their benefits more clearly. When we keep our blessings only to ourselves, they aren’t able to influence the world as much. Rather, our goodness should influence our surroundings, in the city and the field. This relates to the concept of a tzaddik (a person who does right, or, a righteous person) in a fur coat. There are two ways to get warm on a cold winter day. One way is to build a fire, which warms everyone else in the room as well. The other way is to wrap yourself in furs, which conserves your warmth but does not generate any heat or warm anyone else. A tzaddik whose only concern is with his own righteousness is a tzaddik in a fur coat. However, the Torah believes in Tikun Olam, the betterment of the world. We read this week’s Torah portion containing the curses in Parasha Ki Tavo. One of the reasons given for them is not having served HaShem with joy and a good heart. How could we receive such a harsh punishment for serving HaShem with lack of joy? Isn’t just serving HaShem enough? The Kabbalah explains that as fallible, physical, and time bound human beings, we are all imperfect and make mistakes. According to the strict rules of spirituality, punishment should be meted out as soon as one sins. What saves us from this punishment? Our joy and good heart is what saves us from this judgement. By displaying a joyous heart we nullify the negative consequences that should be a result of our actions. King David said HaShem is your shade on your right side. In other words, HaShem reflects back to us, from the spiritual realms, the energy and emotions that we operate with in our lives. May we merit to feel abundant joy in all our endeavors, for blessings and goodness. Shabbat Shalom See more
