There Is no essential need for carbohydrates! We Have essential amino acids & essential fatty acids & yes the body can use carbohydrates a.k.a. sugars but most of us can live without them & the majority of Americans overeat them! It’s not our fault!! The processed food industry is much more organized & strategic then you think. ... They pay Lobbyists, marketing teams & they work diligently to affect public nutrition & health policy & have been 60+ years. We’ve been lead to Believe that protein & fat are bad plus unhealthy plus lead to heart disease, diabetes, strokes, High blood pressure, & basically all of what I call the diseases of lifestyle & they call GETTING OLDER!! BULLSHITTTT!! The truth is getting older does not have to equal getting sicker! We do have some POWER here. We don’t NEED all the carbs we consume! We should start to read books like @drmarkhyman Food Fix & What the Heck Can I Eat & Julia Ross’s The Mood Cure & mine soon to come ) Start by tracking your MACROS Know your numbers (labs & macros) This year I will continuing to show y’all how to move those LABS by changing your FOOD & MACROS. #Repost @jadeteta with @make_repost There’s an ongoing debate about the hormonal effects of food versus counting calories (quantity vs quality). The truth is that both matter. In order to lose weight (more specifically fat) you must have a caloric deficit & hormonal balance. One of my favorite ways to illustrate is to consider a donut & chicken breast. They have the same number of calories. You’ll lose weight if you eat less of them, but they send different signals to the... body. The chicken is mostly protein, the most hunger suppressing of all the macronutrients. It has a chewy/meaty texture versus a cakey/gooey one. It’s more dense and without the high potency flavor hit on the tongue. It is communicating to the brain and body. It will generate more GLP, less GIP, enough, but not too much insulin and less of a neuro-lingual response (the tongue/brain connection that can cause a hedonistic desire for more pleasurable high calorie tastes). The donut is mostly fat & sugar/starch. It contains virtually no protein and has a nearly opposite hormonal outcome. This is why you can easily eat three donuts and be craving another couple within the next hour or so. Eating three chicken breast is daunting for even those with the biggest appetites & can keep you full most of the day. The debate gets even more complex when you consider the individual. Some are more or less sensitive to the hedonic effect of foods. Some people live to eat, others eat to live. One person likes coffee and brussel sprouts the other prefers wine and pasta. Food is not simply a packet of fuel & nutrients, it is also a complex bundle of instructions to your metabolism. The most beneficial foods fill you up fast, produce stable energy, keep you full for hours and don’t make you crave all the wrong stuff later. Be very, very suspicious of anything that advertises "2 net carbs" but has 20g fiber. 90% of the time, that "fiber" is actually starch (aka carbs) that have been modified to resist digestion. It's more accurate to think of them as a "slow digesting carb" than a fiber. **** Those "pseudofibers" often impact blood sugar enough to kick us out of ketosis. As a bonus, all th...at resistant starch combined with a huge amount of wheat gluten is enough to really mess up our digestive track. ***** Here's the deal: theres no such thing as healthy junk food. There's just not. I'm sorry. I know, I know. It would be awesome if we could eat junk food every day and still lose weight and be healthy.... But this is the real world. Humans weren't designed to eat dessert every single day. ***** I'm not saying never eat this stuff. A slightly more keto friendly version of our old faves can be a good way to find balance - if we limit them to a few treats a week. Personally, I always keep Real Good Foods (discount code ketovegetarian) and Mikey's and Base Culture on hand for a treat during Saturday Brunch and Sunday Supper. This chicken pot pie (bone broth) soup is a favorite of mine. Especially since it’s CHILLY here in Los Angeles (I know my East Coast & Canadian friends & family are laughing rn but - for us it’s cold ) There are reasons we live here for sure This is a recipe from @realfoodwithjessica that I adjusted for my family & our way of eating (ok mine) but it’s still really delicious. I used a smaller amount of potato because I didn’t want all the starch/ sugars and gut upset t...hat I get from a lot of potato. I added more full-fat unsweetened, coconut milk (cream) & more veggies plus I added More cauliflower rice just for fiber - & because I love it. I got lucky and it all worked for the recipe, as you know I’m not a great chef. Sometimes it works sometimes it doesn’t. I’m beyond excited as a mother of a powerful FEMALE child that this is her world now. We are getting closer ladies!! My grandma knew a world where she wasn’t allowed to vote & when she could do so she voted in every election. ... She made sure I knew what an important right this was. I come from powerful women & I’m not going backward for anyone else to feel less scared. It deeply troubled me to see females saying they voted for the other side ONLY because they did not trust having a woman (any woman) in office. What??!? Craving delicious foods is completely normal! I know you see myself, your Instagram trainers, nutrition gurus, doctors etc posting pics of all their healthy food like broccoli & salad it’s normal to wonder why you still prefer cookies, candy, donuts ....... fill in with YOUR faves - EASY!! It tastes better!!! It FEELS better TRUE!! (At first) Especially when you’ve grown up eating all those foods! Even more so if you felt you were deprived or restricted of those foods f...or whatever reason! I GET IT! I DO!! It’s a fixable issue! There will come a day when you really and truly want the more nourishing food over the sometimes foods as I call them. The reason we crave hyper palatable, processed, sugary, dairy & gluten packed, MSG & chemical-laden foods is because they are created to make us crave them! ITS A SET UP!! We are supposed to look like an Instagram model /famous athlete /performer (they also struggle w this btw) but we don’t because we are HUNGRY & FEELING DEPRIVED with healthy foods dieting whatever you call it it - it’s deprivation. There are EASY & SIMPLE strategies that start with giving yourself permission to eat foods that you love again, Figuring out exactly what your body needs and why you have certain cravings & fixing the Underlying bio chemical & emotional issues that drive the eating patterns YOU have that don’t serve your highest interest. I’m excited to be refining what I do with people daily (for 24 yrs) down to the Most important simple strategies and tips for redesigning your relationship to food on all levels. From your cells to your thoughts, behavior & feelings. My starting tip is start to LOG /JOURNAL what, why, when & how you eat. Log the feelings. OBSERVE don’t judge. Start by eating quality protein, healthy fats, unprocessed carbohydrates & veggies w each meal. Eat 3 x a day. Don’t under-eat. We all want to look good. We all want to feel good. We can listen to the latest fad diets & trends, we can desperately try every one. And come back to the narratives I’ve heard for 20+ yrs I can’t lose weight I have a slow metabolism.... Why do the people I work with consistently get RESULTS?? Several reasons but an obvious one is LAB TESTING. Do you need it to eat better. No way. But it’s a good idea to know WHY you are gaining weight or unable to permanently lose. 3 ingredients that are everywhere in our food system & almost always GMO + not grown sustainably or with nutrition in mind. This BS is where a lot of our sick, overweight & obese population starts. A nutrient poor diet that’s replete with calorie & carb heavy FILLER SUBSTANCES like these. These mono crops are government subsidized & marketed to us (through outdated & biased food policy) as part of a healthy diet but they are really the majority of what most people eat &... harming us! Ive done thousands of diet assessments & with most new people & even in pro athletes this stuff is prominent until they are taught better. Wheat, corn & soy are inflammatory to most of us & none of us (in first world countries) need these ADDED CALORIES & CARBS when we can be getting both from #nutrientdensefood that doesn’t destroy our gut & exacerbate #autoimmune issues. I have #hashimotosthyroiditis & I try to AVOID these most of the time. THEY DONT SERVE MY BODY. If you want to look & feel better start by logging what you eat & what nutrients you are getting. Or not. If you’re eating the typical sad American diet you are NOT GETTING NUTRITION & you will feel it eventually. Swipe for lists of foods that don’t have these 3 irritants. Unless you’re starving choose REAL FOOD & choose high quality protein, veggies, healthy fats & less processed carbs as needed for YOUR BODY. #Repost @drgabriellelyon with @make_repost The ball is in your court! Despite the popular narrative dietary cholesterol has minimal effect on blood cholesterol levels.... The 2015 Dietary Guideline Committee dropped the cholesterol guidelines. They dropped the recommendation because the scientific evidence did not support having a dietary guideline for cholesterol. We were the last country to drop this recommendation The evidence shows if you go from a high cholesterol diet 500-700 mg to a low cholesterol there will be a transient 3-7% decrease in total cholesterol and that will rebound with in 4 to 6 weeks. Similar changes can happen if you increase cholesterol intake. The reason, blood cholesterol is largely regulated by liver synthesis and LDL (transport and disposal) blood cholesterol is heavily genetically set. EGGS HAVE ESSENTIALLY NO EFFECT ON BLOOD CHOLESTEROL. This has been shown in multiple studies (Note, the average egg intake is 3 to 4 per week). The body requires a 1000 mg per day of cholesterol for cell members and hormones and the majority made in the liver. The average dietary intake in the US is around 300mg daily and the body only absorbs about 50% of dietary cholesterol, so that means we get about a hundred 150 mg per day from your diet and the body has to make 850 mg. Diet is almost irrelevant to blood cholesterol. Carbohydrates and insulin have a much bigger effect on blood cholesterol because they impact the liver regulation of cholesterol synthesis. MACRO LESSONS! Compare the USUAL rice bowl from a healthier (or < ) fast food place @officialpandaexpress has toned down their menu in some areas (as most have) w/ nutrition awareness at an all time high but keep it up guys more to be done! Instead of the left meal MAKE or buy more like what you see me make in stories. Same MACROS Swap all that rice for more protein & veggies & yes! >healthy fats for most of us is a MUCH better choice than all the SUGAR & carbs!! ... You must try hard to overeat the meal on right even if you + way more veggies or even a half a cup of rice if you’re cycling carbs as I do. I’ve been eating this way for decades & I Started my entire practice using the same daily food plan & personalized #macro sheet I still calculate & give out today in my initial consultations. #macros (Macronutrients) meaning protein, carbohydrates, fats + I add veggies for fiber) r SO important & while I do keep Calories in mind in my opinion calories r a much less useful measure & they have been used by food marketing companies for years to justify eating crap food by implying that we can just exercise off that extra couple hundred calories. BS!! Question!? If this is the macro & calorie situation w your healthy meals where are you going to put all those extra snack, candy, chips, cookies that we all like occasionally??! There is no room for those if your macros for meals are so off! What happens is the over sugared under nutrient meals leave you hungry, craving, brain foggy, irritated, tired, etc & that’s mainly why we over eat. Most people who work w me lose the hunger + cravings after first few wks or even days on corrected macros + a few supplements if needed. It’s amazing to me how simple it is & how its held up for ME (& my peeps) over the DECADES! Nov is 25yrs since I started my practice w this premise How can 1 diet be correct for everybody? It can’t. Don’t eat based on myths & food company BS. It’s not hard & HEY!! (the secret NO ONE SAYS) U DONT nd $$ or plans unlesthere’s an emotional/behavioral component -complicated metabolic issue.
