You are cordially invited to view California Lite an on-line art exhibition curated by Julie Rico and sponsored by Arcade Project Zine. The exhibition brings together multicultural artists living in California to present their interpretation of light and life under the California sky. https://www.arcadeprojectzine.com/exhibitio/california-lite Nirali Thakker Nirali' s work is rooted in the tangible and the metaphysical. She mixes ideas of fantasy with everyday life, making h...er works of acrylic and drawings on canvas an interesting mix of autobiographical expression and artistic exploration. Her influences are visible and varied: personal milestones, the feminist movement, motherhood, changing social roles, and especially her experiences of being an emigrant. Nirali’s work is replete with issues that are both intensely personal and universally relatable. Feelings such as love, abandonment, nostalgia, self-scrutiny or monotony are as dominant in the canvases as the characters themselves. The use of latent humor, juxtaposed with a setting completely reflective of the ordinary gives Nirali’s works a flavor of their own. Rendered in bold colors as well as monochromatically, these hybrid multicultural images are evocative, shocking, intriguing and yet, intrinsically relatable. An artist who is both buoyed by her gender and anchored by it, Nirali’s expressions of her sexuality and social roles offer a riveting study of a woman’s myriad prerogatives. She is an alumnus of Parsons School of Design, New York, M.S. University Baroda, and the University of Southern California. Currently- she is a professor for art. Ed Big Daddy Roth inventor of the RAT FINK and Jean Jacques Bastarache and widow Ilene Roth brings back the iconic Monsters in Car images as oil paintings! Jean is recreating some of the work he did for Ed from 1992-2001. Jean is selecting the images he likes the most. In 1992 Ed met Jean and a lifelong friendship ensued. Roth would send Jean drawings of ideas he had for Monsters in Cars and Jean would create colorful oil paintings of the drawings. A portion of all sales of ...this new work based on the old drawings will go to Ilene Roth. Since his death, Ilene continues the tradition of the official Rat Fink Reunion in Manti, Utah the first weekend in June. "The museum that Ilene Roth created to honor her late husband includes displays of Ed's artwork and other memorabilia. Roth's son Darryl has been working on collecting and displaying his father's work. "Roth is best known for his grotesque caricatures typified by Rat Fink depicting imaginary, out-sized monsters driving representations of the hot rods that he and his contemporaries built. Roth began airbrushing and selling "Weirdo" T-shirts at car shows and in the pages of Car Craft magazine as early as July 1958. By the August 1959 issue of Car Craft "Weirdo shirts" had become a full-blown craze with Roth at the forefront of the movement. The article featured Roth along with fellow Kustom Kulture pioneers Dean Jeffries and Pete Millar. Inspired by Roth and Barris Kustoms (whose shirts were airbrushed by Dean Jeffries), Detroit native Stanley Miller, a.k.a. "Stanley Mouse", began advertising his own shirts in the pages of Car Craft in January 1961. The lesser-known Rendina Studios of Detroit and Mad Mac of Cleveland also joined in on the monster "weirdo" shirt craze, but Roth was certainly the man who widely popularized the "monsters in hot rods" art form. The Rat Fink is one of America's most iconic cartoon figures. Ed "Big Daddy" Roth (March 4, 1932 April 4, 2001) was an American artist, cartoonist, illustrator, pinstriper, and custom car designer and builder who created the hot-rod icon Rat Fink and other characters. Roth was a key figure in Southern California's Kustom Kulture and hot-rod movement of the late 1950s and 1960s. Roth was born in Beverly Hills, California. He was the son of Marie (Bauer) and Henry Roth. He grew up in Bell, California, attending Bell High School, where his classes included auto shop and art." Wikipedia See more
