Today, Friday, June 19, is Juneteenth a holiday commemorating the ending of slavery in the United States at the close of the Civil War. Despite the promise of that moment 155 years ago, recent events have brought into stark relief that much more work remains to achieve racial equality and justice in our country. As historians, we believe that knowing our past, especially the injustices, is crucial to building a better present and future. We join our colleagues in the Ame...rican Historical Association, the National Council of Public History, the National Trust for Historic Preservation, and other like professional organizations in their stand against racism, violence, and inequity, and the importance of learning from our history. We affirm our commitment to recognizing the painful legacies of white supremacy and our commitment to celebrating the contributions and achievements of communities of color to our nation. On this day, JRP urges all Americans to support in whatever ways they can the cause of a more just society. See more
