This info is from Steve Hyde of SOBA: This weekend there is a paddle board race at RAT beach in Torrance. It is put on by Oceans Prone paddling. an organization founded by South Bay United Water Polo President Kurt Fry. The goal of this organization is to promote the sport of paddling and attract new participants. Historically, paddling is a tough sport to "just try out" because boards are expensive and the race distances are daunting. Kurt has addressed these issues by off...ering a beginner friendly two mile sprint as well as a 6 mile race to challenge more seasoned participants. He also addresses issue of high equipment cost by offering new Bark Commander paddle boards for rental. Three different board designs are available to meet the needs of different sized paddlers. Obviously the greatest potential source of new paddlers is youngsters. Kid friendly 10' 6 rescue boards are also available for rental. Many kids that have been in JGs are already familiar with these very fun and sturdy devices.
