We know it has been incredibly dry lately, and sadly there are no storms on the horizon through the middle of the month. The big question then is: Does having l...ittle or no snowpack in early November mean that it will be a dry winter? Nope! There is no correlation, so let’s look at recent years as an example. We started with a rather healthy early season snowpack in 2014 and it ended up being a record or near record dry winter in many locations. 2015, 2017, and 2018 were all quite dry early on and we ended up with near or above normal precipitation for the winter. The winter of 2016-17 started with a bang and just never stopped, leading to a record wet winter in many locations. The reality is that seasonal predictability with decent accuracy is beyond the current state of the science, so time will tell what this winter will bring. For more details on the graphics: The bottom images show NASA MODIS satellite views focused on the Sierra for early November 2014-2018 with the associated overall winter precipitation percentiles on the top. Winter precipitation (rain and snowmelt) percentiles in yellow and orange are below normal, with red being record driest; while the greens indicate above normal precipitation, with the dark green being record wettest. If it’s white, it just means near normal precipitation was experienced for those locations over the winter.

Bass Lake Ranger District - Wilderness Trail Conditions... Trailhead Number: A56 Trail Name: Mammoth Trail Destinations: Soldier Meadow, Indian Meadow, Granite ...Creek, San Joaquin River, Naked Lady Meadow, Iron Mountain, Iron Lake, Junction Butte, Access to Inyo National Forest. Trail Condition (trees down, cleared, snow, slides): Mammoth Trail has been newly cleared of trees across the trail from the beginning of the trail at Clover Meadow to the Ansel Adams Wilderness boundary. The trail is well shaded and crosses rolling hills, passing several meadows and cutting through several streams. Some small sections are swampy due to seasonal snowmelt, so stay on the trail and step carefully through muddy sections. Mosquitoes are very prevalent throughout the trail and head nets and/ or mosquito repellent are recommended for comfortable hiking. Mammoth Trail is utilized by the local wildlife, so look for animal tracks crisscrossing the trail, such as deer, coyote, and even bear! **Stream Crossings: There are two large stream crossings across Mammoth Trail. Granite Creek is currently difficult to cross, featuring waist to chest high and fast moving water is some areas, crossing with water shoes and shorts may be possible but is "Not Recommended". The creek near Soldier Meadow is currently crossable with 1-foot high water, and a large log crossing further upstream. Both streams are good opportunities to refill water with proper filtration and very cool and refreshing. Trailhead Number: A60 Trail Name: Walton Trail Destinations: Lillian Lake, Flat Lake, Rainbow Lake, Rutherford Lake, Slab Lakes, Post Peak, Post Peak Pass, Iseberg Pass, Iseberg Peak, Access to Yosemite National Park. Trail Condition (trees down, cleared, snow, slides): Walton Trail has been newly cleared of trees from the trail head parking lot to the Ansel Adam Wilderness boundary. There is loose rock across a few sections of the trail, requiring steady footing and caution. There are good views of the peaks, including Mount Ritter, and Strawberry Mine near the first mile of the trail. Low amount of tree cover present for sections of the trail, so bring some form of sun protection. Switchbacks in good condition. The crossing into the wilderness allows for stunning 360 degree views of the surrounding peaks including Triple Divide Peak, Post Peak, Madera Peak and the John Muir away to the east. This trail also has some wet areas due to continuing snow melt please stay in the trail tread even where there is mud and water. **Stream Crossings: Madera Creek was observed to be flowing heavily, caution advised in attempted crossings. Small seasonal streams are located at several points across the trail, but are easy to step over. These streams provide ample opportunities for water filtration, and are very cool and refreshing. Trailhead Number: A61 Trail Name: Fernandez Trail Destinations: Lillian Lake, Lady Lake, Vanderburgh Lake, Staniford Lakes, Chittenden Lake, Shirley Lake, Gale Lake, Fernandez Pass, Sing Peak, Madera Peak Trail Condition (trees down, cleared, snow, slides): The Fernandez Trail from Clover Meadow is newly cleared of trees across the trail up to Ansel Adams Wilderness boundary. The California Riding and Hiking Trail, which connects Clover Meadow to Fernandez, is fairly dry up to Fernandez Trail Head. As it is spring time there is plenty of snow melt, meaning there are some soggy areas and standing water from the trail head up to the wilderness boundary (boots are recommended, or tread carefully). Keep an eye on overhanging dead branches and broken trees near the trail. There is a very heavy mosquito presence in damp and wooded areas where shade levels are high and wind levels are low, wear a head net and/or bring mosquito repellant. The mosquitoes are worst at Clover Meadow, a bug net is recommended for camping and/ or viewing the Shooting Stars that are in bloom across the meadow. If following the loop down the Fernandez Access Trail to Frog Meadow Trail, step carefully due to large amounts of small rocks across the trail. There is still a large amount of snow across the Frog Meadow Trail making the trail difficult to find in the most shaded, snow covered sections. It is suggested to bring a GPS to ensure that you are on the trail. **Stream Crossings: There is one small creek crossing after the first half-mile, but it is fairly easy to cross with several rocks spanning the creek. There are several clear snow melt streams located throughout hike, good for water refills with proper filtration practices. Any other small water crossing are seasonal streams that are easy to step over. Photos: Trail crews clearing the Fernandez, Walton, and Mammoth Trails, USFS/Evan Tirey

If you need parking for this President's Day weekend at Mammoth Lakes, here is the info from the Town: The Town of Mammoth Lakes has designated temporary overnight parking sites for lodging guests and visitors in need of parking this Presidents' Day Weekend. Due to the excessive and continuous snowfall this season and the limited availability of hotel and condominium parking, the Town has identified four locations throughout the community for temporary parking. Visitors are r...equested to park their vehicles in the designated areas for the weekend only (Friday Sunday) and use the complimentary and convenient transit service. Temporary overnight parking locations can be found on the attached map and are as follows: Tavern Park & Ride, Mammoth Ice Rink - Upper Lot (park on left hand side closest to ice rink), Mammoth Creek Park, and the Hillside Parking Lot. Visitors will not be ticketed during their stay but are asked to vacate the temporary overnight parking sites by no later than Monday evening at 6:00pm. The Mammoth Lakes Police Department is reminding citizens that there is no street parking from November 1 through April 30. Vehicles found parked in violation of these ordinances are subject to receiving a parking citation and/or in some cases, vehicles may be impounded at the owner’s expense. For additional information about this program please visit www.townofmammothlakes.ca.gov, follow Eastern Sierra Transit Authority on Twitter @estabus or review the winter transit map and routes online at www.estransit.com. https://www.townofmammothlakes.ca.gov/list.aspx?MID=1751

The Inyo National Forest and Devils Postpile National Monument announce that the Reds Meadow Valley Road will open on Friday, July 21 at 8:00 am. This road rece...ived storm damage after the substantial snowpack from this winter and the subsequent melt-off and flooding. The forest’s Engineering Crew rebuilt a segment of the road that was structurally compromised and unstable. They placed layers of compacted fill and concrete curbing on the road’s edge to stabilize the road bed. The crew placed concrete barriers and K Rail along other areas where longitudinal cracking was observed to keep vehicles off these cracks to prevent further degradation. The mandatory Reds Meadow Shuttle Bus will run starting Friday. Only exception vehicles will be allowed to drive into the Reds Meadow Valley. Please visit https://www.estransit.com/routes-sch//reds-meadow-shuttle/ for details. The Minaret Falls, Reds Meadow, Upper Soda Springs, and the Pumice Flat Campgrounds will open on Friday. Inyo National Forest water systems are being tested for potability, so hikers and campers should bring their own water. Porta potties will be available at Reds Meadow and Pumice Flat Campgrounds. The Reds Meadow Resort and Pack Station is open with camping supplies. There has been an impressive amount of work that has gone into getting the road open, said Jon Regelbrugge, District Ranger for the Mammoth and Mono Lake Ranger Districts. We ask for our visitors patience while we continue the work to get all services operational. The Devils Postpile Ranger Station will be open daily, 9:00 am -5:00 pm. As a reminder, wilderness permits are issued at the Welcome Center in Mammoth Lakesnot at the Ranger Station. Potable water and flush toilets are available at the Ranger Station. The Devils Postpile Campground is not opening this year. Trail crews are repairing the damages on the trail to the base of Rainbow Falls, which will remain closed until work is completed. The roads in the Reds Meadow Valley are narrow and visibility is limited. All vehicles should use caution on both the Reds Meadow and Devils Postpile roads.
