One of my life long friends recently and very unexpectedly lost his dad. Well, he didn’t lose him. His dad died. On a phone call the day after, we exchanged de...ep compassion and some regret for not having completely cleaned up the relationships with our fathers before they were gone. A few days later, on the way to the funeral, I stopped by my mom’s house to clear the air that had gotten murky between us. When it didn’t happen the way I so wanted, I left thick with grief. Silently, in my mind, as I pulled out of the driveway in tears, I was yelling, Don’t you dare die before we fix this. I’m sharing all of this because we’re all doing the best we can in many ways. And maybe some relationships never get completely cleaned up. And it’s ok. We just keep practicing cleaning out our own hearts of resentments or words and emotions held in, and letting that ripple out to the people we love. Because no one wants to be yelling at a grave, or at themselves while sitting graveside.
