Beginning to plan!

A while ago, I wrote an essay that compared Muir and Lincoln. The paper, in an odd twist of fate, led to my affiliation with John Muir in Coulterville, CA. What I’d learned was that both grew up in similar circumstances. Both, without question, made significant contributions to America. Both had extremely strict Fathers, and both knew the literal Bible in their youth, while often whipped by their fathers and nurtured by their mothers in the upper mid-West. The religious schism that led their Southern brethren in 1845 over Slavery and eventually, Civil War assuredly influenced both men. This legacy, this schism, continues today in new forms. I do not believe the denigration of John Muir or Lincoln as well, perhaps, will help in this Black Lives Matter 21st Century historical context?

We could do much more in this direction. We already embraced the John Muir-Yosemite Historic Highway moniker for the Hwy 132. Some signage would be helpful, been in touch with CalTrans for instructions on how to go about doing that. County and it's cities voted for it, should follow through. John Muir has an international following and they tend to take him very seriously. Surely we could benefit hosting folks who want to learn about all things John Muir. His realization that the sheep that he is herding, chewing up precious flora in the High Sierras (Yosemite), is a bad thing was the epic moment that started our National Park system. Two tough activists for the Environment.

I'm HOPEFUL: The Fire Emergency has brought the Community of Coulterville and Greeley Hill together to help one another. That is welcome news from a JMGC supporter. The artifacts and priceless Yosemite Tapestries are protected and stored. Shortly, they will move to a safe and secure Art Institute in Modesto for cleaning and restoration. The fires and Covid-19, hopefully, will be gone by Spring. Like a phoenix out of the ashes, a celebration of proud and rich legacies of resilience will come. The elections will have concluded, New ethical visions will be in place.
