Hi, I'm Bob. I just bought a piece of property. Congratulations, Bob. Now you have to pay annual property taxes on it. What if I don't pay taxes?... The government will take your property. So the government really owns it, then? No, of course not. But I have to pay them to use it? Yes. And they'll take it away if I don't? Yes. Isn't that the definition of a landlord? Of course not. What if I decide to rent the property to someone else? You can. And I can charge them rent? Yes. And I can evict them if they don't pay the rent. No, not this year. Why can't I evict them and get new tenants who will pay? The government said so. So the government actually does own it? No. Alright, so if my tenant doesn't pay me, do I still have to pay taxes? Yes. And if my tenant doesn't pay me, do I still have to pay the mortgage? Yes. And what if I can't pay the bank because my tenant won't pay me, and I can't evict them because the government said so? The bank sends the government to take your property. Is this some kind of scam? Well, yeah...kinda.. SMH
