Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, our League has been working hard to meet our community’s needs. This National Volunteer Week, we send a huge thank you to the amazing Members whose brave and selfless work is making an impact. At the Junior League of Long Beach, our work has not stopped, and with adjustments made for the safety of our Members, our League is setting an inspiring example of the monumental importance of voluntarism in times of unrest. In March, we hosted a food drive for Food Finders. Organized by our Kids in the Kitchen committee we were able to gather 35 bags of food to support stopping hunger in Long Beach! This is a continuation to our JLLB sustaining members' fundraiser event in February, where we donated $7,773 to Food Finders. These funds will be used to provide family food boxes for Long Beach residents who are experiencing food insecurity. Meet Ashley Hopkins! She currently sits on the Leadership Training Committee and joined the Junior League of Long Beach nine years ago. Ashley is a Long Beach native with a three year stint in NYC under her belt. When she moved back to Long Beach with her husband, Peter, she was interested in joining a volunteer organization but didn’t know where to start! Her aunt, a JLLB Sustainer, suggested Ashley attend a JLLB new member event. She went and learned that JLLB would be a g...reat experience where she could give back to her community, have opportunities to grow her skillsets, and meet other women in Long Beach. It was the right fit! Outside of the JLLB, Ashley is the Executive Assistant to the CEO of AuditBoard, a software company located in Cerritos. Previously she was the Executive Assistant at Guggenheim Partners for nearly 10 years. Ashley holds a BA in Anthropology from CSULB and is a #CODA, or child of deaf adults. Ashley is also fluent in American Sign Language. In her free time, Ashley can be found being active around Long Beach by spending time running, doing yoga, and going on walks with her kids. It’s National Children’s Dental Health Month! Help children in your community develop good attitudes and even better habits when it comes to their oral health. Families, teachers and volunteers can all play a role in reaching the children in your community with ways to make brushing and even flossing fun! The Junior League of Long Beach has a long history of supporting and promoting the benefits of good oral health to children, their caregivers, teachers and others. In 1936 the Junior Charity League, now the Junior League of Long Beach, started the Children’s Dental Education Program, now part of the Children's Dental Health Clinic. Since 1952, the Junior League of Long Beach has raised more than $217,000 to support the Children’s Dental Foundation. #dentalhealth #childrensdentalhealthmonth

Happy New Year! As we reflect on 2020, we are thankful for our community of members, donors, partners and family. We also look ahead to 2021 and the exciting happenings our organization is working on. This year, the JLLB will be celebrating its 90th Anniversary and granting its final philanthropic gift to a local community partner as part of our 90 by 90 campaign. We will be hosting virtual mixer events, welcoming the women of Long Beach to join the JLLB to serve their community. Meet Cheli Nye! She has been a member of the Junior League of Long Beach since 2009. She has a wealth of JLLB experience, having served on multiple committees during her tenure, and this year serving on the New Member Training Committee. Cheli joined the JLLB for the volunteerism, but has stayed for 11 years for the people. She grew up on a farm in Michigan, and came to the South Bay for a teaching job and the warm weather. As a champion of education, she has been a high scho...ol math teacher, assistant principal, and principal. Her current role is Coordinator for the LA County Office of Education. Cheli has a doctorate in Educational Leadership from USC. During quarantine, she has found two new hobbies: crafting cocktails and crocheting. These new activities keep her cozy during these chilly SoCal days. We've stayed connected virtually by hosting cooking classes, book club meetings, virtual game nights, holiday parties, and DIY facial parties with LATHER and Label Me Lindsey. Junior League of Long Beach is proud to say "I Voted" during the 2020 election. Advocacy and bringing awareness to critical issues impacting children in the greater Long Beach community are important parts of our League's work. We are a member of CalSPAC which enables us, along with 17 other Junior Leagues in California, to use our collective voice to advocate for legislation favorable to issues concerning the welfare of women and children. This fall, our JLLB members have been hard at work bringing Especially Me! workshops virtually to young girls in Long Beach. Topics ranged from goal setting, decision making and an anti-bullying guest speaker from 4GIRLS Organization. One attendee, Miss Torres, said one of the most important things she learned was "to stand up for myself." We've been working closely with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Long Beach to bring the workshops to their members and some girls were even able... to hold watch parties together at the Club. Attendees also received a special backpack filled with The Girl’s Body Book, an emergency toiletry bag, a journal, and some fun goodies donated by Sephora. We are hosting 1 more workshop this month on the 9th about Body Awareness. To mark our upcoming 90th anniversary, the JLLB has committed to granting $90,000 in philanthropic gifts to select community partners. This year, we funded the restoration of the Rancho Los Cerritos Herb Garden and the launch of a larger capital campaign for further restorations at the historic site. Meet Bridget McCann! She currently sits on the Nominating Committee and the Diversity & Inclusion Task Force. Since joining the League six years ago, Bridget has been servicing her local community and having fun while at it. Service has been important to her all her life and has helped her make new friends and have purpose. One thing that she truly values (and didn't expect) from the Junior League of Long Beach was how much training and development she would receive. It has e...mpowered her and helped her become an even better member of the community. Many of the skills and trainings she has participated in through the JLLB, such as Organizational Development Institute (ODI) and Facilitator Training, she uses in every facet of her life. From Junior League to academia to her career as an environmental professional, Bridget is finishing her master's degree in Environmental Science and Policy from Johns Hopkins University while being an environmental scientist, regulatory analyst, and policy expert for Chevron's El Segundo facility. Fascinated by the ocean and marine life, one of her favorite research trips was going to San Miguel Island, where she got to see a few great white sharks pass by and enjoyed deep water sampling where she saw interesting species like lanternfish. Bridget is also involved with Everytown for Gun Safety and Moms Demand Action, as well as participating in the local racial justice movement. Data from the CDC’s National Intimate Partner and Sexual Violence Survey (NISVS) indicate that in the U.S., about 1 in 4 women and nearly 1 in 10 men have experienced contact sexual violence, physical violence, and/or stalking by an intimate partner during their lifetime.
