The staff at the Jesse Peter Multicultural Museum want to encourage everyone to wear a mask. Coronavirus can be transmitted even by people with no symptoms. We want to get back to normal life and this is how we do it: by protecting others. #covidsafety #museumsformasks #jessepetermuseum

I've been spending the past week or so "unframing" artwork! When artwork has been framed with cheap, acidic materials, it can become damaged over time. Even when the frame job looks good, if the bevel on the mat is yellowing you can tell that it's likely been framed with cheap paper mats instead of archival rag mats. These are beautiful, valuable Inuit stone cut prints from the Holman Artists' Cooperative and the Cape Dorset printmaking studios in Nunavut, Canada. Sadly, I ha...ve found one print completely glued to acidic backing, which pretty much renders it worthless, but most of the prints are in decent shape still. We will reframe them when we can purchase the archival materials. Until then, they will be safe in the archives. #museummonday #jessepetermuseum #Capedorsetprint #pictureframers #holmanartists #stonecutprintmaking #printmaking #archival #SRJC #curatorlife #SyollieArpatuk #kalvak #Aliknak #Paulossie See more

A lovely trio of twined lidded baskets from the Klamath River region of Northern California. We only have dates for the largest, which was made around 1910. All three are gorgeous! This is a Skaktetra- a Swedish knife used to prepare flax. They were used for scutching, which is the process of loosening the bark from the flax fibre after it is harvested. Scutching knives were often gifted to newly married couples as a wedding gift. The knife is a functional fertility symbol and blessed the union with the promise of sustenance, health and a continued future. On this one you can see the couples initials painted near the handle, and the date 1839. #musuemathome #museumfromhome #learnfromhome #college #srjc #jessepetermuseum #swedishart #europeanhistory #collegestudent #skaktetra

The huipil (pronounced wee-peel) is the Spanish word for a garment worn by Guatemalan women for many centuries. It is one of the few pieces of traditional clothing that survived the Colonization of the Americas. Each huipil is traditionally hand-woven on a back strap loom. The designs, representing regional styles, are created by weaving colored yarns into the cloth as it is being woven. Some Huipils have ceremonial symbolism. These garments are worn by every social class, and are works of art that can sometimes take months to create. #jessepetermuseum #srjc #museum #Guatemalan #huipil #SRJC #MuseumFromHome #textiles #wearableart #backstraploom #museumathome

Who loves miniatures? Here is a tiny set of vintage bone Mah Jongg dice from China. The carved wooden box has the name of the original owner written in traditional Chinese. #mahjongg #miniature #museummonday #MuseumFromHome #jessepetermuseum #srjc #tiny #culture #china

Basket of the Day! This stunning Apache Basket tray is about 18" across and has a terraced spiral pattern. It probably dates to the late 1800's or early 1900's and is in pristine condition considering the age. #basketoftheday #jessepetermuseum #srjc #apache #basketry #museumfromhome #museummonday #nativeamerican #culture

One of my all time favorite pieces in the Jesse Peter Museum by the iconic Acoma artist, Lucy Lewis, c.1890-1992. This piece is dated 1983.

Behind the scenes at the museum. Sometimes objects need to be treated for insects, and this is my second try at creating a big chamber for larger or delicate objects. The chamber is filled with oxygen absorbing packets and then flushed with nitrogen gas, which creates an anoxic atmosphere. Pests can't survive without oxygen. The first one I made leaked, so it didn't work. Crossing my fingers for this one! If it leaks, it's the corner seams, which are super hard to seal. #curator #jesse.peter.museum #museumlife #behindthescenes #fumigation #pestcontrol #srjc

Today's basket is a Karuk women's hat. Very finely woven using the half twist overlay technique, the design is created with maiden hair fern stems and dyed porcupine quills. #basketoftheday #jessepetermuseum #karuk #basketry #klamathriver #basketryhat #SRJC #museumfromhome
