Gravity Pop-Up Performance Project (PPP) 2020 Application for Black Performance Artists and Collectives ***This is an open call for Black artists*** For the end of 2020, Jess Curtis/Gravity has brought on Gravity affiliate and resident artist Gabriel Christian to curate up to five performances for its Pop-Up Performance Project. As a direct response to limited engagement, depleting resources, and over-tapped grant pools, this is a chance for Bay Area-based Black performance a...rtists and collectives to be commissioned and compensated for mounting their work in public space. This is not intended as a commission for new work as much as a laboratory for ongoing work or work with which you're already engaged. The loose theme of this curated series is "RE:________". Replenishment, reclamation, reparation. You, as the artist(s), will fill in this blank. As COVID-19 and recent air quality renders public space as either a nuisance, a threat, or a zone of high-risk, this series seeks to push artists and the public into re:thinking how they can engage responsibly with our new political, environmental and material reality. By staging work out of studio and outside, we hope curated artists develop a keen sense of how to cope inside of an increasingly externalizing and digitizing art world. This work must be performed in public space in San Francisco; artist and curator can brainstorm alternatives if there are health concerns, as our circumstances develop. It can be durational, experimental, out of the box, but will happen once. Curated artists will receive: > a $500 stipend > professional documentation (video and/or photo) > mentor and peer support from Jess Curtis and Gabriel Christian https://docs.google.com//1FAIpQLSe3QbB-SYLw3EC83/viewform
