GRAIN FREE FOODS & HEART FAILURE - DOGS & CATS. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced in 2018 a possible link between Dilated Cardiomyopathy (DCM) & Heart Failure, and GRAIN-FREE PET FOODS. These foods replace grains with ingredients like peas, lentils or potatoes. Some foods lacked taurine, an amino acid. By April 2019, the FDA received 524 reports of 560 dogs & 14 cats with DCM and/or HEART FAILURE on Grain-Free foods. Some died (119 dogs, 5 cats). The FDA lists... 16 brands of Dog & Cat food under investigation. (Blue (Blue Buffalo), Taste of the Wild, Rachel Ray, Nutro & Merrick are some brands. (FDA website- https://www.fda.gov//fda-investigation-potential-link-betw). Veterinary Specialists (esp. Nutritionists & Cardiologists) advise all pet owners to NOT FEED GRAIN FREE foods or boutique, small brand pet foods. Feed only foods from Royal Canin or Purina's highest quality OTC diet: Purina Pro Plan. These companies formulate their foods based on solid scientific research & feeding trials. P.S. Royal Canin re-homes all their dogs & cats! If your pet seems to have a food allergy, we will be happy to help you select the right food that is safe. Your veterinarian, not pet store personnel, is your best source for your pets' dietary needs. Please let us know if you have any questions.

FDA issues XYLITOL update: It’s not just in sugarless chewing gum anymore! XYLITOL (a sugar substitute) is now in other foodgums, mints, ICE CREAM (!), baked goods, dietary supplements & drug products (mouthwashes & toothpastes). There are cases where owners gave foods containing xylitol to dogs, not realizing the potential effect. Countersurfers or backpack-raiders stole xylitol containing food. Signs include Low Blood Sugar (fainting, weakness), vomiting, decreased activity, staggering, collapse, and seizures. Please check ingredients of your "Low or No Sugar" Foods for xylitol. If you think your dog ate these products to seek veterinary care immediately!

ELEVEN (11) Brands of DOG FOOD RECALLED due to potentially Toxic Levels of Vitamin D On Monday December 3, 2018, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced that at least 11 brands of dog food products are recalled due to EXCESS & POTENTIALLY TOXIC LEVELS OF VITAMIN D. Some Brands are:... Nutrisca, Natural Life, Sunshine Mills, ANF, Inc., Lidl, Evolve, Sportsman’s Pride, Abound (sold at Kroger), and Nature’s Promise (sold at Giant and Stop & Shop), and others, the FDA said. This may not be a complete list. Retail chains commonly buy products from a contract manufacturer and sell them under various brand names. Please check the brand of food your dog is eating. If there is any question, throw it out! The affected products include GRAIN - FREE, CHICKEN, LAMB, RICE and other flavors. Some of the products contained as much as 70 TIMES the intended amount of vitamin D. Excess vitamin D in food can cause vomiting, loss of appetite, increased thirst, increased urination, high blood calcium, excessive drooling, and weight loss. Vitamin D at toxic levels can cause kidney failure and death. The FDA is urging pet owners whose dogs have been eating the recalled brands and are showing these symptoms to contact their veterinarians immediately. . Veterinarians can submit those reports either electronically through their safety reporting portal or by calling their state’s FDA Consumer Complaint Coordinators.

Flea and Tick Season is Here and is Now a Year-Round Problem. The last 2 winters were warm, temperatures were above 32 F. Adult fleas & larvae did not die. Flea & Tick populations just keep increasing. Fleas do not live on your pet; they live in the house & outdoors. You may not even notice them, but your pet does. Fleas & flea feces carry tapeworms, Bartonella-cat scratch disease; both can be transmitted to humans. Ticks carry Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever both human diseases. Protect your pet year round against fleas & ticks. We can help with the latest effective, safer products for your cat and dog.
