The claims companies will make to win business... Was getting bombarded by adds of "graphene" solar panels... turns out they're no more efficient (perhaps less so) than what has become industry standard. "300 watt panel, 60x40"... that's standard size. Our same size standard panels have 340 watts, with superior kWh yields... and are warrantied by a "blue chip" for 25 years to still produce 90+% of their power. Don't be fooled by people promising breakthrough technology... when it actually breaks through, JDS Power will know about it and will bring it to you first.

Out doing some maintenance today on a system in Fallbrook. (Energy sector is "critical support" and exempt from the stay at home order.) This one was one of our first installs using new ground mount technology that doesn't require concrete. And the customer is doing an excellent job of maintaining the weeds around the perimeter so that no one has to approach the array with a weed whacker. With bi-facial smart panels and heterojunction cells (read "really great solar panels"), this system is still making half of its system rating at 3:30 on a cloudy day, while other systems might be operating closer to 25%. Another new construction project knocked out by JDS Power in Rolling Hills. There was a lot of discussion about batteries but in the end the economics were not there (yet). Instead, we installed daytime backup power - 2000 watts per inverter available almost the entire day and we also made sure the system was wired in such a way as to make it easy to add batteries once the prices come down. In 2012 JDS Power was one of handful of firms selected from across the country to beta test this new technology. We’ve been installing these daytime back up power outlets ever since. Hmmm... What's wrong with the array in this picture? In fact, it's pretty emblematic of what you can expect from a large Wall Street-backed firm... The array is covered in palm trees and won't produce even a third of what it should! The fact that this company posted an advertisement of this house should be all the warning you need about working with them...

Did you know that almost all solar shuts down during a grid outage? Why? So we don't zap the linepeople trying to restore power. Most solar companies will tell you that the only way to use your solar when the grid fails is by adding batteries. Not true... JDS Power residential systems work, even when the grid goes down. This is something I've seen coming since about 2002, when I saw youtubes of the "T-Zero" (first EV with Lithium batteries) smoking every exotic supercar from Porsche's to Lamborghinis. I realized then that someday people will get tired of enriching the middle east, Russia and other oil rich regimes and they'll realize they can instead fuel their own vehicles with free sunshine. This also comes up in all of my solar consultations now... I used to not say much for fear of soun...ding self-interested. But the reality is that if you're not thinking about your future car being a plug-in or full EV... you're likely missing an opportunity to ALSO eliminate your gas spend. It's a lot easier to do one solar project for all of your present and future needs, then to come back later and try and expand your system. Go all in... convert what you can to electric... and then come talk to us about solar.

Lots of talk about batteries but the reality is they're still prohibitively expensive in most cases. Here's another solution... a "bridge to batteries". We've been installing these since 2014... no additional cost. Just comes standard on every JDS Power system.

This might seem a little counter-intuitive to post (coming from a solar company). But just because we're fans of solar and the reduced emissions that solar makes possible, it doesn't also follow that we're a fan of the Paris Climate Accord. Dealing with a situation for a friend that went solar before JDS Power was selling residential... this big national installer signed them up for prepaid lease and gave them a 1 year leak warranty... now the roof is leaking and they're telling them it will cost $6500 to uninstall and re-install. This is just criminal... It's the responsibility of the solar contractor to confirm that a roof has a suitable life left before solar is installed. You don't want a 30 year asset sitting on top of a roof with 10 years of life left. It's the big companies that have the "gotchas" in their contracts... buy local.
