This past Friday our all school assembly heard from Ahmet Ustunel, a Turkish ocean-lover and boat enthusiast who grew up near the Bosphorus. Ahmet, who is blind fulfilled a lifelong dream of paddling solo from Asia to Europe last year, using a navigation system he helped to create. Now he is committed to making water sports accessible to the blind or visually impaired people. As he shared "I learned that the barrier isn't blindness, it's the misconceptions that exist about blind people, as well as the lack of accessibility." Ahmet is featured in a new documentary about his journey, The Blind Captain.

On Friday morning, the entire JCHS Professional Community came together for a Courageous Conversations "Beyond Diversity" Seminar, to gain tools for navigating difficult conversations about race, racial identity, and racism. This is part of our ongoing work to understand the impact of race on student learning and the climate of our school. By participating in this shared experience, we continue to build a culture of honesty, accountability, and grace. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KLsm8h9qSuQ

Didi Miller's finished tiny home!
Paused but not stopped by the pandemic . . . Class of '20 graduate Didi Miller completed construction of the tiny house that was his JCHS keystone project. Now beautified with a mural, it is one of twenty-five 8 x 10' houses that will be opening in Oakland sometime this fall as part of a first-in-the-nation tiny house village. Check out the next post to see the finished home and mural!

We were honored to have the creative team of "I, Too, Sing America" join us for Hakhel today. Othello Jefferson, Jamie Yuen-Shore, and Rodney Earl Jackson Jr. offered gut-wrenching performances, inspiring insights, and thought-provoking commentary around the creation and evolution of this landmark musical, which took as a jumping off point the poem by Langston Hughes. #itoosingamerica
