This is only the start to actual change. The love that's being shared is amazing, but kind words and promises are are wasted without action! The Interior Design industry is a very monochromatic one! I've been to various trade shows, applied to many jobs and attempted to join various associations where I have been stared at, questioned, overlooked and treated as non existent or invisible. I have also noticed how few people of color I have seen in these environments and especia...lly any of my own race. I have had to sarcastically ask myself if none of these businesses or groups ever ran across black applicants or participants? I mean ,what other reason is it that I find myself swimming in a sea of (mostly blonde), white people? How do they not notice that they only see people that look like them, around them? Do they ever ask, or do they just not care? Why do we need a @blackinteriordesignersnetwork ? Why are one or two people of color amongst an entire company of many employees seen as acceptable? Why are we (people of color) the only ones asking these questions? The catalyst for change doesn't end at a well written post or a singular apology that occurs in a moment of empathy, it starts with questioning what you've believed for so many years and asking why have you believed that? Is there a possibility that you were wrong and if so, what are you going to do about it? ... What are you going to do about it? Let's continue sharing the Love and profound move of empathy, but after all the commotion has ended, let's put that emotion into action. I look forward to the future from here. Do you still use your dining room? It seems as we get more and more involved in our work lives and the million other tasks that fill our days, that there is much less time dedicated to cooking and dining (by dining, I mean actually sitting at a table and eating). So it feels as if the dining room is becoming less and less useful in the layout of our homes. It's always a tough task to design large rooms with very high ceilings. The massiveness of the space can easily make even large furniture feel small. The best way to handle that is to fill the space with symmetry between the ceiling and the floor. Bring the ceiling down with dropped lighting, beams and or molding features. On the floor use properly scaled furniture to fill the space with furniture layouts that fit the function of the space.
