With smoke, soot, and ash from the local fires affecting much of Southern California, follow these tips to help protect your vehicle from fire-related debris: ...1. Park in a garage whenever possible. 2. If your vehicle is dry, remove soot and ash with a car duster, leaf blower, or compressed air. Clean the headlights and taillights for maximum visibility. 3. When washing your vehicle at home, wet it thoroughly with warm water, then use a soft mitt, towel, or sponge, and formulated car wash soap. 4. Once the fires clear, inspect the engine air filter and cabin ventilation filters and replace them if needed. 5. If you haven’t changed windshield wipers for the winter season, do so before using the wipers again. 6. Keep the sunroof and windows closed. Since wind can carry smoke far beyond the flames, run the air conditioner on re-circulate until the outside air quality improves significantly. 7. Thoroughly vacuum vehicle floor mats and cloth surfaces. 8. Once the smoke clears, wax your washed, cooled vehicle in the garage to minimize ash and soot damage to the clear coat.
