How can I get my employees to be more engaged with our mission? That's a big issue in many company cultures. And I think the answer may not be so obvious.... The truth is, culture begins even before people get hired into your business. 1. Find people that are naturally inspired by a mission Howard Schultz, the former CEO of Starbucks, was asked, "How do you get your employees to smile all the time?" His answer was essentially, "I really don't."We just hire people that smile all the time." It's easier to cultivate someone who likes to smile than to take someone who doesn't like to smile and then have them smile all the time. Apply this to your company by finding people that are naturally inspired by being a part of a mission. 2. Find people that are inspired by your specific company mission When you're qualifying people, look for those that are mission-inspired. Even better, look for those that are very aligned with the mission-specific to your company. So rather than forcing people into being engaged, find those who naturally are aligned with your specific mission to start with. As leaders, we need to find senior leaders that can actually share ideas and ask for ideas. Resistance to culture change is common. If you are experiencing culture resistance, just know it's normal. Oftentimes, what I find is that resistance comes with:... 1. A lack of understanding 2. A lack of caring 3. A lack of trust I always look at these situations from a perspective of an individual and an organization and through the lens of what I call the 3P and 3L North Star. So from that context, when you're looking at resistance, you need to know and understand what their 3L North Stars are at the individual level. People need different things for different reasons. Understand their 3L North Star and then align it to your 3P North Star. In some cases, it just won't align, and that's where you head into the potential where this is not a fit. But what you're really trying to do then as a leader and executive, is always looking to align the 3L and the 3P North Star.
