Interesting article on pain. Good read for anyone experiencing pain whether acute or chronic. One theory on how acupuncture treats pain is that it blocks nociceptors which according to the article, Once they [nociceptors] are activated, they trigger a whole cascade of events ... signal going through your nerves and into your spinal cord and then all the way up to your brain...Pain signals interact with many different brain areas, including those involved in physical sensation, thinking and emotion. And this is why there is a huge emotional component to physical pain. These findings can help to understand chronic pain, ptsd and maybe even anxiety and depression. #acupuncture #towellness #thousandoaks

In addition to a myriad of other conditions, acupuncture can be used to treat hypertension. A recent study performed by researchers at the University of California, Irvine surveyed how acupuncture treatments affected people with hypertension, also known as high blood pressure. Results showed that 70 percent of study participants experienced significant drops in blood pressure after the treatments, and that these effects lasted for up to 45 days after the study. On these resu...lts, cardiologist Dr. John Longhurst stated, By using Western scientific rigor to validate an ancient Eastern therapy, we feel we have integrated Chinese and Western medicine and provided a beneficial guideline for treating a disease that affects millions in the U.S. Because electroacupuncture decreases both peak and average systolic blood pressure over 24 hours, this therapy may decrease the risk for stroke, peripheral artery disease, heart failure and myocardial infarction in hypertensive patients. Together, those things will give us the knowledge to figure out what’s going on with your body and that knowledge is true power. Healing is not just one thing. True healing is a number of things working together towards a common goal.

Insomnia, also known as sleeplessness, is a sleep disorder where people have trouble sleeping. Insomnia is typically followed by daytime sleepiness, low energy, irritability, and a depressed mood. It may result in an increased risk of motor vehicle collisions, as well as problems focusing and learning. Insomnia can be short term, lasting for days or weeks, or long term, lasting more than a month. Preliminary reports found that in patients with anxiety, acupuncture increased nighttime melatonin production and total sleep time. The patients who received acupuncture also fell asleep faster, were less aroused at night, and were less stressed. If you are suffering from insomnia and want to learn more about how acupuncture can help you, contact Ito Acupuncture today. 805-338-0162 www.acu-painfree.com
