Though this is an informative article, I added an additional topic of great importance for desert living below. An important topic missed in this article is with regard to energy, which is crucial to maintaining comfort in the home. For example, energy efficient air conditioning system with a minimum of 14 SEER or greater. Also important are energy efficient windows, doors and even window treatment in order to maintain homes cool as well as warm in the winter, since the deser...t can become very cold in winter months. As a desert resident myself, I have considered even installing a natural gas generator in case there are rolling blackouts, as they can (and do) occur during high demand periods during the summer. Without power in the middle of summer, a situation can become extremely uncomfortable and for some, even life threatening because of excessive heat during the summer months that can exceed 120*F.
