What I wish someone had told me in my 20s is that when you turn 40 you literally give no shits about what anyone thinks of you. You just want to laugh with your best friends. No one is looking at you. No one cares. There is no such thing as social currency or popularity. Being yourself and being happy is what everyone strives for.... Here’s the good news - you don’t have to apply to college totally financially blind. Meet Net Price Calculators!... Net Price Calculators (NPC) will estimate how much you have to pay after scholarships and grants from the federal and state governments and the school itself are subtracted. But - heads up - not all NPCs are the same. When @masongecowets ruptured his spleen, suffered internal bleeding, and spent two weeks in the ICU due to a football injury, I told him he should quit. My mama-heart could barely handle the pain I saw. Mason laughed at me and said, I can’t control my challenges, but I can control how I react to them.... I then watched him do everything he could to heal himself physically and mentally. He became the trainer’s assistant, helped the coaches film games, and got scouting reports together. For his physical recovery, Mason started swimming because moving on land was too painful. Then, he moved on to biking and, eventually, running. The doctors said it would take at least 6 months to heal. Mason did it in 4, and then he was back on the field. He is humble and genuine. When he isn’t playing football, he works part-time at this church. It’s safe to say I am the self-proclaimed president of his fan club. Today, I also get to say CONGRATULATIONS because Mason is headed The Ohio State University!! Privilege, Deceit, and the Making of the College Admissions Scandal. Yup, it’s all here. And, SO AM I!! What?!... Unacceptable was written by two fantastic journalists from the Wall Street Journal who have been following the Operation Varsity Blues Scandal since the news broke. In the last year, I have been contacted by various journalists and media outlets, but none have come close to my experience with Jennifer Levitz, one of the book’s authors. She interviewed me about half a dozen times, and she always came to this story from a genuine place of curiosity. She asked me questions about everything from how the admissions process works to how family values and cultural dynamics play a role in that process. Does anyone else have weird platonic crushes OR IS IT JUST ME? How about weird platonic crushes on an entire family? Because that’s the sitch we’ve got over here. It’s hard to put into words my feelings for @avamowery_ , but I’ll do my best.... I first met Ava years ago when she accompanied her older brother to one of his college counseling meetings with me. She was quiet and impeccably well-mannered. I learned she was a pre-professional ballerina and - because I’ve worked with my fair share of bunheads - instantly knew she was extremely disciplined. Then, big brother left to attend Vanderbilt, and it was Ava’s turn to begin exploring her heart and her mind and make some decisions about her future. We talked about and explored ALL. THE. THINGS. - religion, science, social issues. Ava applied to a list of wonderful colleges and poured herself into her applications. I knew from Day 1 that Ava had a strong work ethic, but I also came to discover that she possesses the greatest qualities of all: integrity and character. I believe that everything stems from character, which is why it’s the first pillar in my PersonalBrand model. I think colleges saw these qualities, too, because she was extended offers of admission from UCSB, Washington University in St. Louis, Westmont College, Davidson College, Baylor University, Wake Forest University, Belmont University, Elon University, and Point Loma Nazarene University. In true Ava fashion, she diligently researched each school and had to make a very difficult decision without ever visiting many of these schools. #classof2020strong I have every confidence she made the right choice.
