Happy Friday! We would like to share some helpful tips on what to look for when purchasing Group Health Insurance: 1. Don't let the price affect your decision. It is very natural for employers to choose plans that are the least expensive. (higher deductibles and high health care costs) Look at the coverage options first and the price tag last.... 2. Understand the Cost terminology. - Copays: are flat fees that consumers must pay when receiving a medical service. These are fixed amounts for emergency room visits, primary care physician, and specialist visits. - Deductible: refers to the amount the consumer has to pay (out-of pocket) before the insurance company covers the remaining costs. - Coinsurance: After the consumer meets their deductible, both the consumer and the insurance company will share the cost. (Typically it's a percentage ranging from 80/20 to even 50/50.) If your coinsurance is 80/20, that means the insurance company will cover 80% and the consumer will pay 20%. The cost sharing stops when the medical expenses reach your out-of-pocket maximum (this will be stated in your policy). 3. Look for Provider Freedom. - HMO: This stands for Health Maintenance Organization. With an HMO plan, you must choose a Primary Care Physician (PCP) from a network of local providers or the PCP can refer you to an in-network specialist. - PPO: This stands for Preferred Provider Organization. With a PPO plan, you do not have to choose a Primary Care Physician (PCP)/referrals. You can go to any health care professional inside or outside of your network. Keep in mind: staying in network means lower copays and higher level of benefit coverage.
