International Orange Chorale of San Francisco 05.11.2020

Postponing this season due to COVID-19 has been frustrating for all of us in IOCSF, but it’s also given us the opportunity to connect with our composers at greater length. This week, Zane hosted a composers’ forum featuring discussion with Julia Austenfeld, Lauren Bydalek, Bryan Lin, and Sam Maurer, who discusses with the choir their pieces that will be performed in IOCSF’s next concert. All of the singers enjoyed it, and it might be something we can incorporate into every se...ason, even when we’re not stuck at home! . . . . #choir #choralmusic #newmusic #composers #virtualchoir #stayhomeandpractice See more

The Peace of Wild Things, written by our assistant conductor Elizabeth Kimble (@secret_of_iris), won in the voting for audience favorite when IOCSF premiered it in 2017. This Friday, we’re all excited to listen online as it’s introduced to a whole new audience: the Swedish Radio Choir will be performing it as part of a concert featuring American composers. The text by Wendell Berry is a particularly fitting reminder to seek out things that are permanent amidst these turbulent times. @ San Francisco, California

We’re sad to announce that our planned June 2020 Freshly Squeezed concert series will be postponed. As much as we want to share this great concert of choral premieres with you, public health must take precedence, and there simply isn’t any way that IOCSF can be together with all 30+ members to present a concert of live music to our audience. We’re looking forward to presenting this program in December 2020, and in the meantime, we’ve got some great things in the works, includ...ing the release of a new album of live recordings! . . . . . #choir #choralmusic #newmusic #sanfrancisco #acapella #livemusic #concerts #socialdistancing See more

This Sunday night, IOCSF had a video call with three of this season’s composers joining us to talk about their pieces. Many thanks to Mari Esabel Valverde (I Flow... I Am), Kyle Randall (When You Are Old), and Michael T. Roberts (A Prayer In Spring)it was great to hear about the similarities and differences in your inspirations and compositional approaches, and we’re really looking forward to singing all of them in our next concert! . . . .... #choir #choralmusic #newmusic #composers #virtualrehearsal #sanfrancisco See more

At our virtual rehearsal this Sunday, we’ll be hearing from three composers of pieces featured in our upcoming program. One of the composers who will be joining us is Michael T. Roberts, our 2020 composer-in-residence! In our next concert, we’ll be singing his piece A Prayer In Spring, a joyous, waltzing celebration of the season with text by way of Robert Frost. . . . .... #choralmusic #choir #newmusic #acapella #gohomeandpractice #socialdistancing #sanfrancisco See more

And here’s a scene from our Tuesday night alto sectional. Scrolling through the IOCSF Instagram feed, we’re seeing a lot of similar photos of video calls posted by other choirs in the Bay Area and further afield. So great to hear that singers all around the country are finding ways to share music with each other during these challenging and uncertain times! . . . .... #choir #choralmusic #newmusic #gohomeandpractice #virtualchoir #altos #alti See more

Everyone is here! IOCSF’s first virtual rehearsal with the full choir went surprisingly well. We ran through When You Are Old by Kyle Randall and had a group discussion of a couple pieces by IOCSF composers. Short but sweet, and just what a lot of us needed to get through the week ahead. . . . .... #choir #virtualchoir #choralmusic #newmusic #gohomeandpractice #socialdistancing See more

Like a lot of other choirs in the Bay Area, IOCSF is experimenting with virtual rehearsals while we are under shelter-in-place guidelines. Our first trial run at a bass sectional this morning was actually pretty productivewe got the chance to run through a few pieces, perform for each other, and talk through some trouble spots. Stay safe and healthy, everyone! IOCSF is adapting as best we can to the current situation and we’re looking forward to sharing this season’s concert... of Freshly Squeezed new music with you as soon as we’re able. . . . . . #choir #choralmusic #acapella #socialdistancing #choraldistancing #remoterehearsal #gohomeandpractice @ San Francisco, California See more
