I am pleased to share with you the long-term results of the TARGIT-A Trial comparing partial breast single fraction targeted intraoperative radiotherapy (IORT) to 3-6 week post-operative whole breast radiotherapy, demonstrating equivalent long-term outcomes. The paper was published today in the British Journal of Medicine. Recognizing the potential of IORT, I started performing targeted IORT in 2006 as only the second U.S. co-investigator in this 2,298 subject multicenter, in...ternational RCT. These clinical trial results have been a long time coming. It’s been a privilege to participate in this trial and co-author this publication as well as participate in or lead multiple other targeted IORT-related publications/clinical trials, several of which are ongoing. The TARGIT-A trial is largely responsible for establishing IORT as a standard of care option for early stage breast cancer in the U.S. IORT is now covered by Medicare and most health plansthe result of a decade-long advocacy effort. In addition to being efficacious, separate publications have shown targeted IORT to be associated with fewer side effects, improved quality of life, and reduced healthcare cost compared to whole breast radiotherapy. https://www.bmj.com/content/370/bmj.m2836
