Let’s talk about the City of Long Beach and it’s love for Spanish Revival style homes and buildings. (Back in July, we went over the Craftsman Bungalow-gotta love ‘em). According to longbeachneighborhoods.com, when it comes to the architecture we commonly see in our historic Long Beach homes, there are three main styles, Craftsman Bungalow, Spanish Revival, and Mid-Century Modern. So where did Spanish Revival style come from and why do we love it so much?... Spanish Revival style (1890-1929) emulates original Spanish Colonial style built by settlers between 1600-1800s. Common design elements include: low-pitched roof with little or no eave overhang, a red-tiled roof, perhaps a prominent rounded arch over a door, window or porch, a stucco wall surface, and usually an asymmetrical facade. Spanish homes were built with local, available resources, and out of necessity, evolved to function well in hotter climates. The thick walls are said to keep heat out during the day, while cool tile keeps the interior comfortable. By evening, the heat that has penetrated the walls warms up the home for a comfortable night. Windows in this style of home are small and commonly arched. *Interesting find! Original Spanish windows did not have glass, they used wooden shutters or wrought iron bars. And why arches? In the 700s the Moors invaded Spain bringing with them architecture that developed in North Africa and the Iberian coast. It is a variation of Islamic art. The two Long Beach neighborhoods that are the home to hundreds of Spanish Revival houses are Belmont Shore and California Heights.
