Immigration Institute of the Bay Area 02.01.2021

When Cristina and Abraham’s daughter Amelia was born prematurely, they worried constantly about keeping her healthy and strong. Their worry was compounded by persistent fear that because of Cristina’s legal status, she could be separated from her daughter at any time. After seeking the help of the Immigration Institute of the Bay Area (IIBA), Cristina and Abraham no longer have to worry their family could be torn apart. IIBA’s legal team helped Abraham, a U.S. Citizen, petit...ion for Cristina to become a permanent resident of the United States. Their daughter, Amelia, turned two in August. She is healthy, happy, and full of joy. Please consider making a gift in support of immigrant families like Cristina, Abraham, and Amelia this holiday season at donate.iibayarea.org/holidayappeal2020 #standwithimmigrants #keepfamiliestogether

Seven years ago, the Napa Valley Community Foundation invited IIBA to open an office in Napa. IIBA sprang into action, and after an extensive search, hired Madeline (Mady) Feldon (now Hernandez) to lead this new venture. In seven years, IIBA Napa has gone from a staff of one to a legal team of ten and with our partners have helped over 1,500 individuals become citizens. We’re proud of what we have been able to accomplish, proud that Mady was the recipient of the 2019 CanDo S...pirit Award, and that this past year alone, the IIBA Napa team has conducted over 1,200 legal consultations and filed over 850 immigration applications on behalf of Napa residents. The coming year is full of promise. President Elect Biden has pledged to reinstate DACA in the first days of his presidency. In anticipation, IIBA is expanding our Napa legal team and are delighted to welcome Meli and Laura who you can read about in this newsletter. With your support, we can help even more immigrant families in Napa County. https://mailchi.mp/31d3754d22e4/napacando #community #napavalley #napacounty #candogiveguide #napavalleycando #nonprofit #legalaid #bayarea #standwithimmigrants

The entire staff of IIBA is gearing up for 2021. President Elect Biden has pledged to reinstate DACA in the first days of his Presidency and we are hiring additional legal staff to help meet the increased demand for our legal services. After 4 years of unrelenting attacks on immigrants, we welcome the opportunity to do all we can to support immigrants on a path to citizenship. You don’t need to live in Napa to support IIBA’s work. Every dollar up to $30000 will be matched thanks to the generosity of Turley Wine cellars and Libby Schafer.

For years now, LinkedIn has teamed up with IIBA to help immigrants seeking economic opportunity and stability in the United States. Since 2017, LinkedIn’s Pro Bono Team has helped people achieve their dreams of U.S. citizenship, by hosting IIBA’s naturalization workshops on LinkedIn’s Campus and by providing pro bono support for the workshops. LinkedIn’s Pro Bono Team has also worked with IIBA’s legal team to make sure young immigrants can successfully renew their DACA status..., granting them work authorization and protection from deportation. Hanh Vo, Vice President of Commercial Legal at LinkedIn and the co-founder of LinkedIn’s Pro Bono Team, says, LinkedIn’s vision is to create economic opportunity for every member of the workforce, so IIBA’s DACA and naturalization workshops were a natural fit for LinkedIn’s Pro Bono Program. This year, with community safety in mind, IIBA converted our in-person workshops to remote workshops using Zoom. Since then, LinkedIn’s Pro Bono Team has supported two virtual DACA renewal workshops and one citizenship workshop, helping 30 individuals renew their DACA status and 20 eligible green card holders apply for U.S. Citizenship. IIBA's Immigrant Voices October Newsletter is out now! This newsletter is dedicated to our Pro Bono Colleagues, some highlighted in this newsletter, who have partnered with IIBA at our virtual workshops, helping individuals fill out their citizenship and DACA renewal applications. In the past three months, over 100 Pro Bono Volunteers have contributed over 300 hours in support of immigrants. As a result of this partnership, 60 individuals are now on a path to citizenship and ...another 29 have completed their DACA renewal applications, granting them renewed work authorization and protection from deportation. IIBA's Pro Bono Partners' support not only expands our capacity to deliver legal services, but also sends a clear message to our clients: We care about you. You are not alone. A special thank you to our Pro Bono Sponsors who are helping cover the costs of IIBA's immigration workshops. Did You Know? Before a federal agency, such as the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), implements a new rule or regulation, the public has the right to voice their opinion in the form of a public comment. By law, federal agencies must read and seriously consider all public comments before publishing their final rule or regulation. IIBA has submitted public comments against:... --The Trump Administration's public charge rule targeting low-income immigrants who access certain public benefits. --The Trump Administration's exorbitant fee increases for many immigration applications, including an 83% increase in the cost of applying for citizenship and a first time ever fee for asylum. --The Trump Administration's fee waiver rules which would result in a dramatic reduction in the number of low-income individuals who would be able to submit immigration applications. --The Trump Administration's restrictions on asylum seekers, making it nearly impossible for many people to claim protection in the United States. Everyone can make their voice heard! Learn more about submitting effective public comments to the Federal Register by reading this cheat sheet from the Brookings Institution: https://www.brookings.edu///08/ES_20180809_RegComments.pdf
