Condor Release in San Simeon, CA - November 19 and 20, 2020. The first four condors released in 2020 by VWS went as planned and couldn't have gone better. The ...first to come out was Tich', which means condor in the Salinan language. The release is live-streamed in real time. The primary goal of a condor release is for all birds to return to the release site, feed, and develop healthy habits. Watch along with our team of biologists as the condors adapt to the wild at ventanaws.org. See more

Did you know that Native Americans weren’t granted the right to vote until 1957! In 1924, the Indian Citizen Act was proposed by Representative Homer P. Snyder and signed by President Calvin Coolidge, meaning indigenous peoples were granted full U.S. citizenship (Even though they are and always will be the first original citizens of the America’s). Despite being granted full citizenship in 1924, not all Native Americans were granted the right to vote until 1957 due to discriminatory state laws which used a variety of excuses to prevent members of tribes from fully exercising their rights.

Posted by Stella Adelman of Dance Brigade's Dance Mission This year has been rough, to say the least. Full of grief, heartache, anger, fear... There have also been times of extreme beauty and inspiration. And I am holding on to those... tightly. ... Many of those moments of grace have been connected to working on the multi-faceted Acorn Project (presented by Dance Brigade's Dance Mission as part of our WORD & HOME series): From REINDIGENIZE, to Dancing Earth's Between Underground and Skyworld, to Acorn Grinding demos, to this latest installation of the project, Chishkale: The Blessing of the Acorn. Honored to work with these master artists, culture bearers, and land stewards: Tiina T. Parker, Kanyon Sayers-Roods, Bernadette Antoinette Smith, Rulan Tangen, Vick Torea, Ethan Goldwater, and many others who have the good sense to no longer be on Facebook. If you missed yesterday's screening and panel, here is a link to the film. (A recording of the panel discussion can be found on Dance Mission's website under "past events".) https://youtu.be/IssWTvg5Vb8

"When Western settlers forcibly removed tribes from their land and banned religious ceremonies, cultural burning largely disappeared. Instead, state and federal authorities focused on swiftly extinguishing wildfires... But fire suppression has only made California's wildfire risk worse. Without regular burns, the landscape grew thick with vegetation that dries out every summer, creating kindling for the fires that have recently destroyed California communities. Climate change... and warming temperatures make those landscapes even more fire-prone. So, tribal leaders and government officials are forging new partnerships." Read on. Notice. How White supremacy + capitalism --> led to cultural genocide --> led to climate change --> led to wildfires --> led to destruction of our earth Schooling & assimilation taught us to not just forget, but to banish and mock Native American people & all the thousands of years old ways they kept us safe. May we continue relearning indigenous ways that took care of us before the colonizer brought harm. https://www.npr.org//to-manage-wildfire-california-looks-t
