Dr. Hans Barnard from the UCLA Cotsen Institute of Archaeology leads the way to Cerro Colorado in Millo 2 during the The Vitor Archaeological Project (VAP), a multidisciplinary evaluation of the La Ramada and Wari occupations in Vitor, Peru from 500 AD - 850 AD.

This is a bear figurine and obsidian tool deposited in house posthole found during our Boncuklu Project field school in 2015! The occurrence of a bear and an obsidian tool displays a deliberate depositional act of symbolic significance. It is interesting given the bear reliefs at later Çatalhöyük, so the symbolic significance of particular animals, also important later is clear here. These ‘magical’ practices involve interesting symbolic exchanges, figurines, bone tools and obsidian for posts, canid jaw for human body potentially designed to satisfy various cosmological forces.

You will come home capable of identifying the major material classes of prehistoric artifacts, have a good working knowledge of the culture-history of the Midwestern US, understand the challenges of modern curation and be proficient in the basic methods employed in managing collections, be competent in database use (FilemakerPro), and become versed in the legislation governing archaeological collections in the US (including NAGPRA).
